What to Expect for the CPS this Winter...Part 2

Northside Prep, 5th in the state last year, has gotten an additional boost with the appointment of International Chess Master Florin Felecan as head chess coach.

Chess
For years it was Lane and Whitney Young battling for city chess supremacy. Whitney Young is still there, but Northside Prep has asserted itself another major player. Northside Prep busted out last year with its first city championship in chess after a close 36-32 win over Whitney Young. Whitney Young and Northside Prep entered the state meet #1 and #2 seeds. Whitney Young ended up with a 3rd place state trophy and Northside Prep had its highest state finish ever with a 5th place finish. The two will be at it again this year. Northside Prep had only one senior out of thirteen players on its state roster. Whitney Young returns 7 out its top 9 players including its top 3. Kelly, 21st in the state last year, looks to rebuild after heavy graduation losses. Lane Tech should be improved and Lincoln Park could be a factor at the city tournament.

Boys Swimming

Mossimo Chavez(so) of Whitney Young broke a CPS medalist slump at the boys state swim meet by finishing 11th in the 50 yard free style. A lot of eyes will be on Chavez to see if he can improve on his finish. Mossimo is the younger brother of former Nortside Prep star Alexa Chavez.  Alexa won 13 CPS swimming titles for Northside and now swims at the University of Illinois.

The CPS title will come down to either Whitney Young, Lane Tech, or Northside Prep. Whitney Young has won 3 CPS championships in a row. Northside Prep was second last year, only 12 points behind Whitney (boy does NCP wish they had Mossimo Chavez), and perennial power Lane looks to bounce back after not participating as a team at the CPS meet last year due to disciplinary reasons. Lane will be boosted this year by members of its sophomore team from last year that won the sophomore title by 135 points.

What to Expect for the CPS this Winter...Part 1

What does the CPS have in store for winter high school sports? I'll give you my take on a sport by sport basis.

Wrestling
Lane Tech has dominated CPS wrestling for most of the last couple decades. That won't change this winter as Lane returns another strong team. This year they will have to do it without the services of two time state champion Max Schneider who has graduated. City runner up Bowen has an emerging program and will be strong again. After those top teams what team will step up? Taft? Agriculture Science? Austin? Kelly? I hope those teams are seriously working out because I know Lane and Bowen are.

Girls Basketball
Whitney Young has won or come in 2nd 4 of the past 5 years - including a state championship last year. The Dolphins will be a state championship threat in class 4A again this year. Class 3A had Morgan Park and Crane reach the final 16. Class 2A had Raby reach the final 16.  CPS girls basketball is alive and strong with Whitney Young a state caliber team every year and strong programs at the lower classes.

Boys Basketball
Simeon is going for another state title and also wants to be the number one team in the nation. As long as Jabari Parker(sr)- the number one or two player in the nation stays healthy, Simeon will be right there in the state and maybe the nation. Right on the heels of Simeon is Whitney Young. They have their own player in junior big man Jahil Okafor(jr-C)- who some are calling the best big man in the nation. Cliff Alexander(jr-F) of Curie is rated the number one junior forward in the nation according to Rivals.com.  I'm not going to be covering much of Simeon, Whitney Young, Morgan Park, Curie, and most of the rest of the top boys basketball teams in the CPS because the rest of the media will cover those schools. Instead, I'll be covering mostly Red-North schools.

Winter Sports Tipoff

The Winter Sports season tipoffed this week with first games in boys and girls bowling and girls basketball. Next week chess tournaments begin, girls basketball Thanksgiving tournaments tip off, wrestling meets start, boys swim meets begin, and the big dog boys basketball Thanks Tournaments will start. Indoor track won't start until February.

I look forward to another exciting winter sports season.

I'll still be focusing on football and track and cross country talk in this blog. Lots of offseason material to discuss. But from time to time I'll write about some of the other sports. I'll cover some basketball, but basketball by iteself is a beast. There are more hardcore CPS basketball fans out there than any other CPS sports. When I was at the Simeon Lake Zurich state playoff football game, I talked to several Simeon alumni. Although we started talking about football, the topic somehow always veered towards basketball.

I'll do some basketball posts, but the topic of boys basketball is so big that someone can easily make a whole separate blog just on boys basketball and have unlimited number of material to write about. So, I'll leave most of the talk about the big boys- the CPS has tons of them (Simeon, Whitney Young, Morgan Park, Bogan, Curie, Crane, Orr, Farragut, etc) - to other publications. Instead I'll talk around the fringes and talk about some schools that don't get all the attention (Mather, Lane, CVS, and of course Harlan, etc).
