Yesterday, some mostly CPS teams played some games at the old Weber High School gym on the Northwest Side. Weber was a Catholic School that had a rich history, but was closed down about 10+ years ago (or more). Here are the results of the games:
Providence-St. Mel 48, Taft 47
Despite the loss, Taft is showing me it can compete. I'd love to see how Taft performs at the upcoming Luther North Tournament.
Schurz 52, St. Benedict 42
Schurz is now an impressive 11-2. This is not a very tall team, with few if anyone abouve 6-3. But the Bulldogs are winning and are absolutely one of the contenders along with Steinmetz, to win the Blue-North Conference this year
Von Steuben 57, Brookfield Academy (Wis.) 48
A much needed win for the Panthers who are now 3-3 and still have to play in the rugged Proviso West Tournament. They will be lucky to even get a win in that tournament.
Libertyville 52 Lane 42
recap by Matt Villanueva
All of us had been looking forward to this game in our schedule because it would take place in "The Old Weber" gym. This is the court Coach Krzyzewski started his basketball career as his grammar school home games would be played in this gym. With all the exitement out of us, we took the court against a solid Libertyville team. Early on, we were doing good breaking down their 1-3-1 defense and our offense as a whole seemed to be fine as we cruised to a one point first half lead. The second half was a different story. Libertyville seemed to be taking advantage of our lazy defense and got the ball up the court before we could set up on defense and scored on several fast breaks. Eric Butler (senior guard) (22 points) rallied us back to within 3 with agressive takes to the rim and accurate free throw shooting but us being unable to get back on defense in transition proved to be key. Senior Forward Jeremy Brick led Libertyville's balanced scoring with 12 points. We now look forward to the Luther North tournament with a chance of once again making it to the Championship Game.
