It's easy to talk about the stars. However, in this article I am going to talk about some other performances in the CPS finals that were unexpectedly good.
Alex Meza(jr) of Kennedy- 10:33.37 in the 3200. After starting the season as a relative unknown, he came up with the biggest performance of his life with a 10:33 in the first heat of the 3200 meter. The junior is not an unknown anymore. More eyes will be on him at sectionals and definitely in cross country. Teammate, Chris Salcedo(jr) broke 11 minutes in the 3200 with a 10:57.
Dakari Howard(jr) of Whitney Young- 49.79 in the 400. I knew that Howard, the Group A 55 meter champ, could sprint. I did not know he could run the 400. Now everyone knows as he broke the magical 50 second barrier in the 400. He improved by over 2 seconds from prelims. He has suddenly immersed himself in the coversation as potential state scorer in the 400.
Christopher Dolton(sr) of Morgan Park - 10.79 in the 100. This is one of the fastest class 2A 100 times in the state. At the begining of the season we all knew about Brian Carter and Lonnie Washington. Now, with the emergence of Dolton, we are talking about a potential 100 meter sweep at state in the 100 meter dash for the CPS. Darius Smith in class 2A and Dolton, Carter, or Lonnie in class 2A.
Yusef Hood(jr)- Kenwood - 2:01.04 in the 800. A 2:01 would be good enough to win the 800 in most years in the CPS. Not this year. Hood finished in 3rd. He is nearing times where he will start getting class 2A 800 state possible qulifying times.
