Westinghouse, Urban Prep, Chicago Bulls, Hubbard, Gage Park, Austin
None of these schools have any kind of realistic chances to advance someone to state. For these schools it is all about evaluating individuals. Westinghouse and the Chicago Bulls have been moved up to class 3A because of the multipler. They are both new schools and have only freshman and sophomores on the roster. Carlos Singleton(so) is a sprinter on the rise in the CPS. Westinghouse decided to run him at the varsity level at city where he finished with the 13th fastest time in the 100 at prelims with a time of 11.36. Also look out for Lazyrick Middlebrooks(so) of the Chicago Bulls College Prep. Middlebrooks finished 2nd in the 400 meter at the city frosh-soph championship with a time of 52.09. That is the 2nd fastest time for any frosh-soph runner in the CPS this year.
Kennedy, Kelly, and Curie
In my opinion, these 3 schools have so much potential. They are all schools with large enrollments but for some reason have not maximized what they could do in track in the past. But things seem to be changing at these 3 southwest side schools.
Kennedy
Kennedy has a pair of rapidly improving distance runners in Alex Meza(jr) and Christopher Salcedo(jr). Meza ran a 10:33 3200 meter run to place 11th in the city. He also placed 11th in the city in the 1600 meter run. Salcedo ran a 4:57 mile at city. I'd like to see some continued improvement out of those two at sectionals. Kennedy could also stack up their 4x800 meter run. They ran an 8:43 earlier this year and are capable of an 8:30 type performance.
Kelly
For some reason top distance runner Enrique Florentino(jr) was a DNS at city. Kelly also has a couple promising athletes in Matthew Figueroa(fr), Hernan Mendoza(jr), and Vidal Thomas(jr). Mendoza is a 2:09 800 meter runner. Thomas placed 6th in the city with a 20-6 leap. I know these are not eye popping numbers, but for Kelly it is good for their future.
Curie
Curie has too many athletes from its football team to stay down for long. Top sprinter is Maurice Fleming(jr), Curie's starting QB and a top rated college football prospect. City shot put champion Vaugh King(jr) has come on strong lately and threw a 47-1 to win the city shot put title. Jorge Rodriguez's(fr) 2:09 in the 800 at city prelims was the fastest open 800 time for a CPS freshman this season.
