2009 CPS Girls Class AA Pre-Season Rankings

Jamie Hershfang of Payton
Jamie Hershfang (jr) - 84th at state last year -  will lead #1 Payton. Payton returns 6 of it's top 7 runners for a team that finished 8th at state sectionals and won city at the frosh-soph level.

Here is an early 2009 pre-season poll. The rankings are based on the assumption that all underclassmen from last year will return this year.

1. Payton - (2008 results: 1st at frosh-soph level; did not run at varsity level; 8th at sectionals)

For the last several years, the talk at the city level  has primarily revolved aroung Lane, Northside Prep, and Whitney Young. This year, you can add Payton to the mix. Payton returns 6 of it's top 7 runners from a team last year that dominated at the frosh-soph level winning with 36 points. Payton is led by junior to be Jamie Hershfang. Hershang finished 4th at the frosh-soph level last year with at time of 12:49. She was the sole reprentative in the state meet for CPS Girls Class AA, where she finished in 84th place. Also look out for returning #2 runner Savanah Gramman (so) and returning #3 runner Gabbi Kelenyi. Payton finished 8th at sectionals last year and has a chance to become the first CPS class AA school to qualify for state as a team in 2009.

2. Jones (2008 results: DNR as a team at city; 12th at sectionals)

The fate of Jones will likely revolve around senior Cade Yankowski. Yankowski was Jones's only varsity runner at city where she finished 36th with a time of 21:49. At sectionals, Jones managed to run a complete team of 7 runners. Yankowski improved her time and finished a respectable 29th place at sectionals with a time of 20:33. She helped Jones to a 12th place sectional finish. Yankowski finished 8th at last springs CPS city track championship in the 1600 meter run with a time of 5:59.

Yoselin Flores
Yoselin Flores (sr) - little known but talented runner from Kennedy. She finished 6th 3200 meter run at last spring's city track championship.

3. Kennedy (2008 results: DNR as a team at city; 14th at sectionals)

The good news is that Kennedy returns pratically everybody from last year. The bad news is that only one returnee from last year ran below 23 minutes for 3 miles. The good news is that their top returnee Yoselin Flores is a good distance runner finishing 35th at sectionals last year with a very good time of 20:48. Flores also finished 6th at the 3200 meters at last spring's city track finals.

4. Lake View (2008 results: 6th freshman level at city; no team results at sectionals)

After Payton, nobody has a better top 3 than Lake View: Adriana Ortiz, Angelina Jaimes, and Kathrine Davila. All should return this year. Ortiz missed qualifying for state by one spot, when she finished as the 6th individual at the Niles West Sectional. She was one individual spot behind, Jamie Hershfang of Payton who grabbed the last state individual spot. The fate of Lake View in 2009 will depend if they can find 4-7 runners who can support their top 3.

Others: Kenwood, Gage Park, Manley, Little Village, Cristo Rey, Noble Street, UIC College Prep

IMPROVING....Intial Thoughts of CPS Girls Cross Country as the Summer Starts

Northside Prep Girls Cross Country
After a bit of a dip last year, expect Northside Prep to rise back to prominence this year as they should be boosted by a great incoming class of freshman.

I expect boys cross country to be much improved in the CPS this year, but you can't forget the girls. Girls cross country will be vastly improved as well.

We all know about two time defending city champion Whitney Young who has qualified for state two years in a row. Their top 3 will be seniors and should be improved with piratically everyone returning from last year. Then coach Bob Geiger said that a girl from Regina Dominican has transferred to Whitney Young.

Then there is Lane and Mather who is always in the mix.

Last year Northside Prep took an uncharacteristic 4th place after finishing 2nd for the previous 4 years before that. But this year, the word is that Northside Prep will have the best incoming batch of freshman it has ever had. Some newcomers that may be in the picture include: Ryan Speese,  Hikari Sugisaki, and Marlyn Bruno. According to Northside Prep coach Jon Gordon: "as many as five of the incoming Freshman are projected to make the Varsity squad as high school Freshman." So you will definitely see some new names and faces when you talk about Northside Prep Girls Cross Country.

Then we have Harlan. Harlan did not have enough runners to score a complete team at any level at the CPS championship last year. Look for that to change this year as Harlan has hired a new cross country coach in Dr. Mark Thompson. We do know he will coach the boys and he will also probably coach the girls. If he does look for his coaching expertise in cross country to pay immediate dividends. I'm not going to project how good Harlan will be. But I do know if Dr. Thompson coaches girls they will be vastly improved.

Time will tell how good CPS girls cross country will be in the CPS. I do know the CPS has excellent coaches on the girls end. I think it will only get better.

Welcome to the Big Leagues! Public League Roughed Up at State Cross Country Meet

Thompson and Lavinia
Devyn Thompson (left) and Lavinia Jurekiewicz of Whitney Young were all-state runners (top 25) last year, but finished a still impressive 87th and 27th place respectively this year.

The Chicago Public League came into the 2008 version of the cross country state finals with great expectations - and rightfully so. Last year, the Public League had one team (Whitney Young girls) and three individuals (Agafanov and Areki from Lakeview, and Coronel from Mather). This year the Public League had more representation - 1 team (Whitney Young girls) and a whopping 6 individuals (2 girls and 4 boys). Last year, the CPS felt lucky to get there. This year, expectations were higher. Whitney Young was expected to finish higher than their 14th place state finish from last year and even had dreams of a state trophy. Jose Mora of Payton the Public League's number one class AA state qualifier and Kulayfi Haji the Public League's lone class AAA state qualifer all harbored thoughts of an all state finish.

Instead, reality hit. The Public League, while vast improved from last year, still has ways to improve if it wants to compete with the big boys in state cross country compettion. Whitney Young finished a shockingly low 19th place - when many thought they were a top 10 team shoo in. Jose Mora of Payton finished 93rd place overall (16:24). Kulayfi Haji of Lane Tech - who ran a 15:23 last week at sectionals - finished an even more distant 120th place (15:47). Class AA state newcomers Omar Tall of Kenwood and Oscar Medina of Lakeview got a quick initiation in the state series and finished in 132nd and 133rd with times of 16:49 each. Jamie Hershfang, a sophmore from Payton, finished in the top 100  with an 84th place finish in class AA girls.  The Public League's top individual runner was Aden Alemu (freshman) of Mather who finished in 65th place with a time of 18:12. Aden is the only Public League individual who ran a better time at state then they did at sectionals.

On the plus side, this was a great learning experience for Public League runners - and coaches. Every single runner who ran in the Public League at state this year return next year. Whitney Young has 3 runners next year in Devyn Thompson, Rachel Joravsky, and Lavinia Jurkiewicz who will have one more try next year as seniors. In class AAA, Kulayfi Haji will be senior next year, and thus he has one more year, to reach that elusive all-state status. A feat that no Lane Tech runner has accomplished in more than 25 years. In class AA, Jose Mora will be senior next year and Medina and Tall will be juniors. Hershfang of Payton will be a junior and Alemu will be a sophomore.

So everyone has another year to improve. It is not guaranteed that any of the state qualifiers this year will make it next year. We also have a great batch of up and coming young talent and programs developing in the Public League. How we do next year, will depend on how each one of them and thier coaches focuses on what they can do today to improve for tomorrow.

Aden
Aden Alemu (freshman) of Mather was the Public League's top indivudal finisher with a 65th place finish and time of 18:12.

Payton Captures Frosh-Soph Girls City Championship - Whitney Young 2nd - Lane Tech 3rd

Jamie Hershfang of Payton
Jamie Hershfang of Payton finished in 4th place (12:49) to lead the Grizzlies to the 2008 girls frosh-soph city championship, Payton's first city championship at any level in cross country.

On October 18, 2008 the CPS held the city championship at Washington Park. Payton decided to fore sake the freshman and varsity level city championship and run all of it's talented freshman at the frosh-soph level. The result was domination by the Grizzlies as they finished 5 runners in the top 14 and 4 in the top 8.  The win by Payton over Whitney Young prevented a clean sweep by Whitney Young in the girls levels. Whitney Young won at the freshman and varsity girls level - and took 2nd at the frosh-soph girls level.

Payton was led by sophomore Jamie Hershfang who finished 4th overall with a time of 12:49. Payton was boosted by a talented freshman class that included Kelsey Marron (5th 13:25) Miriam Cohen (14th 14:41) and Savanah Grahm (6th 13:39).

Payton's strategy of focusing on the frosh-soph race worked as Payton, won what I believe is it's first city championship at any level boys or girls in cross country.

UIC College Prep Takes Third in Freshman Girls City Championship; Whitney Young first; Lane 2nd

Freshman girls champ Hannah Blackwood of WY
Freshman girls city champion Hannah Blackwood of Whitney Young. Blackwood, has a gymnastics background and may actually pole vault for the Dolfins coem track season.

In an effort to get more participation and runners involved in cross country, the Chicago Public started a freshman level city championship 2 years ago. In the inaugural girls city championship, there weren't any team scores kept and that first race featured 24 runners. By the way the first freshman girls city champion was Richelle Cavanaugh of Lane Tech with a time of 14:53 for the 2 mile race.

Two years later the 2008 CPS freshman girls race ran last Saturday at Washington Park featured 6 teams and a total of 48 runners.

Whitney Young tipped Lane Tech 36-37 for first place. Surprisingly, UIC College Prep, a new CPS high school located in the west side of Chicago by the UIC campus finished in 3rd place with 94 points. UIC College Prep is running it's first season of cross country after opening it's doors just a couple months ago. Their freshman girls team made an impressive debut by finishing in third place. UIC did not run a varsity squad, and focused only on it's lower levels because that is all they had. The school opened in August 2008 with 180 9th graders. UIC was led by freshman Venus Rivera who finished 5th with a time of 14:11. Could UIC be a future cross county power similar to the likes of Payton and Northside College Prep? Nobody knows for sure. But at the event, UIC made it's prescence felt and has a couple of passionate young coaches who are not from Chicago and thus bring a fresh perspective.
