This meet will be centered around 4 teams: Brooks, Fenger, Robeson, and St. Rita from the Catholic League. Those 4 schools will have a great majority of the qualifiers.

Brooks has a balanced team and will qualify in numerous events. Look for middle distance runners Malik Lee(jr) and Byron Kelley(jr), hurdler Daniel Medrano(jr), and jumper Ahmad Bradshaw(jr) and thrower Derrick Williams. With those athletes Brooks can also stack up a good relay team or two. I think they can put a 4x4 that can run under 3:30 and a 4x8 that can run under 8:25.

Fenger will mainly rely on the speed of Shavell Lucas(sr)  and Avion Marshall(sr)- both all-city sprinters. Lucas ran a PR of 11.08 in the 100 at the CPS finals. Look for Fenger to qualify in the 4x1 and the 4x2.

Robeson has hurdler Brian Sturgis(jr) and a host of athletes that they can stack up to try to qualify in every relay including the 4x8. I feel they can get a 4x8 team that can run in the 8:40's. Then again, they may want to focus on the 4x1, 4x2, and their bread and butter the 4x4. Robesons 4x4 has been all state in class 2A the last 2 years. No more Pipkin brothers, but their 4x4 should qualify for state.

Also look out for King all-city sprinter Victor Taylor(jr), Gage Park sprinter Manjaro Jackson(sr), Dusable's 4x200, and Harlan thrower Destry Cross(jr).

Chris Ballard of Gage Park opens some eyes at Geneva Wrestling Tournament

Nikko Liotta (sr) of Mather continued his great season with a 2nd place finish. Liotto has won two big tournaments this year (Walther Lutheran and Mid-States (WI) Tournaments.

Gage Park and Mather from the Chicago Public League traveled to Geneva High School for a wrestling tournament. Gage Park finished 12th and Mather finished 15th out of 18 teams.

Gage Park junior Chris Ballard (jr) opened up some eyes with a big victory at 285lbs. Ballard beat Jake Arnellani of Rockford Boylan 6-2 in the finals.  Ballard is a star football player on the Gage Park football team. Ballard looks like he will be a challenger at 285lbs in the upcoming CPS city wrestling championship.

Week 5 Saturday Thread

The House is Back!  Playing a varsity schedule with only freshman and sophomores Westinghouse football is off to a smashing undefeated 4-0 record. Westinghouse is a heavy favorite against UIC College Prep. (WCP photo).

Other games to watch -
Payton vs Carver - Payton has stud running back Justin Smith and is leading the Chicago Great Lakes Conference with a 2-0 conference record. A win will put Payton in a great position to finish in the coveted top 2 spots. A team that finishes in the top 2 in a Chicago Conference is state playoff eligible. I don't think Payton has ever made the state playoffs, so this is a big game for them.

Gage Park vs Kelly - This sounds like it would be a good soccer match-up. But both schools have decent football programs. After two conference games Gage Park is surprisingly sitting atop the Chicago Windy City conference. Kelly, the soccer school, played Julian tough in a 14-7 loss last week. For a school to go 3-1, the school has to have a couple standout players. The two players people talk about for Gage Park is quarterback Kevin Wims and WR/LB Rashied Treadway (6-2, 195, sr). Also on the watch list is sophomore linebacker Chris Ballard. He's got great size at 5-11, 225lbs and he is one of the top tacklers on the team.
