Championship Time

Curie

 Sam Altman of Curie

Curie will count on the play making ability of WR Sam Altman (Tribune photo)

Peak performance near the end of the season. That is the goal of every team and every athlete. This weekend several sports will have their season defined and remembered by these upcoming games. Lane Tech’s Boys varsity soccer team will play Kelly in the city championship this Friday. Lane Tech’s football team will play Curie this Friday night for the conference championship. The boys and girls city cross country championship is this Saturday. The Lane Tech girls double team will try to make it downstate as they compete in the state sectionals. The boys 16-inch softball team and girls volleyball team also play in the city playoffs.

Below is a quick preview of some of these games that will help determine WHO IS THE CHAMPION!!

Anthony Jantke Offense

Senior lineman Anthony Jantke (left) of Lane Tech will try to help Lane reclaim the conference title in which they have held for at least 8 of the last 10 years.

Football – Lane Tech vs Curie for the Conference Championship

When and Where: Friday, October 17, 7:00pm at Lane Stadium

After a season opening loss to Fenwick, Lane has played undefeated ball and is on a complete roll. The Indians breezed through conference play and now have only Curie to beat before they can re-claim the conference crown. Lane finished an uncharacteristic third last year after losing to Curie and Whitney Young in conference play. Look for a balanced offensive attack from Lane. Quarterback Luis Negron will complete enough passes to supplement the Lane running attack led by junior running back Thaddeus Scott and sophomore running back Fredrick Williams. Meanwhile, Curie has been on a roll as well. After starting the season with losses to Mt.Carmel and Stagg Curie has rolled off several victories in a row and is undefeated in conference play. Look for senior quarterback Andy Chemelia throwing to his favorite target Sam Altman, a big athletic wide receiver.

LaneTechFan’s pick – Lane Tech 24 Curie 22

Kelly team

Jonathon Fuentes (left #10) leads a dangerous Kelly team that has aspirations to advance far in the state playoffs. First course of business...take care of Lane Tech for the city championship.

Boys Soccer – Lane Tech vs Kelly in the city championship

When and Where – Friday, October 17, 7:00pm at North Park College

Having finished 1-2 in the Premier Conference of the Public League, Kelly and Lane came into the city playoffs as the favorites to meet in the city championship. The two favorites survived the playoffs and the dream match up is here. Lane and Kelly tied each other 1-1 in Lane’s first game of the season. But Lane is looking for some redemption from last year after Kelly ousted Lane 3-0 in last years first round of the city playoffs.

Kelly looked very strong after their 4-0 dismantling of Whitney Young in the semi-finals. Kelly plays a ball control style of soccer led by probably the city’s best player Jonathon Fuentes, a senior mid-fielder. Fuentes has complete control and mastery of the ball every time he touches it and delivers precision passes.

Meanwhile Lane has a few playmakers of it’s own. Coach Andrew Ricks feels that mid-fielder Emanuel Guzman is a star in the making and may be even better than Fuentes, but Fuentes get’s the respect because Fuentes is a senior whereas Guzman is a sophomore. Guzman delivered the game winning assist to senior forward Henry Gomez in Lane’s slim 1-0 victory over Taft in the semi-finals.

The key for Lane may be the continued good play of some of it’s young player who get extensive playing time including sophomore forward Dylan Allingham, sophomore forward Kristian Dus, and junior mid-fielder Charlie Drane.

LaneTechFan’s pick – Kelly 2 Lane 1

Kristian Dus

Kristian Dus is one of several sophomores that may play a role for Lane Tech.

Rain drenches many Saturday games; but not Lane/CVS football game

Saturday was supposed to be a big sports day for Lane. Instead, heavy rains caught the headlines by  canceling many high school sporting events throughout the state of Illinois. It rained for most of Saturday morning causing flooding in outdoor sporting venues. The highly anticipated big meet debut of the Lane cross country team at the Wauconda Invitational was canceled by meet officials. Lane had planned on running it's A team at this Invite. Many CPS cross country fans were eagerly waiting to see the debut of Lane's varsity A team. Lane was hoping to use the Wauconda Invite as a barometer to see how strong their varsity team was against good suburban competition. It looks liek we won't know how good the varsity team is until next week when the varsity A team runs at next weeks Peoria Notre Dame Invitational.

Another casualty was the the Lane Tech vs Wheaton Warrenville South boys varsity soccer match. The heavy rains caused postponement of this game and all the other games in the Pepsi Showdown, the largest boys varsity soccer tournament in the midwest. Lane's boys varsity team is one of the strongest teams in the city and hoping to get a great test against a traditional suburban power.

One game that did get underway was the Lane Tech vs CVS football game. Lane was able to trounce the Cavaliers 22-8.

Soccer - the soccer program had a great turnout for soccer team tryouts for all levels. Over 80 players tryed out. Is there any reason, why Lane's soccer teams are so competitive?

Fall Sports Playoffs Preview Part 2

City playoffs begin this week for fall sports. Below are some of my thoughts for each fall sport; (Part 2 of 2)

Rudulfo_frasual_in_action2

Rudolfo Fransual (forward) hopes to lead the soccer team deep in the playoffs.

Boys Soccer

In 2005, Lane Tech won the city championship and advanced to the state supersectionals. No Public League school has advanced to the state supersectionals in soccer, until the 2005 Lane Tech team.

In 2007, Lane took 2nd in the city and advanced to the sectional semifinals. The last two years, no Lane Tech team has had greater success in the state playoffs than the boys soccer team. So, the expectations are high again this year. But the big stars from the last couple of years have graduated. All-city players Peter Bielecki, Edwin Rodriguez, and German Cervantes have graduated. However, this year's team had enough talent to win city and be the second team ever to get to the state supersectionals. Their biggest victories this year thus far have come against Andrew and Oswego. In order to win city they will have to get past great teams from Prosser, Juarez, Kennedy, Kelly, or their nemesis Farragut.

Dream goal: win city and advance to the state supersectionals.

Football

Lane Tech is 6-0 and their defense appears to be the strongest defensively in years. But, aside from Evanston and maybe CVS, their victories have come against weak competition.

The goal for any Lane Tech football team is to a get at least 1 victory over suburban schools in hte playoffs. They did it in 2004 when they beat York in the firs round before losing to the eventual state champs Downers Grove North. They did it in 2002 when Lane beat Fremd in the first round. The last time Lane won city was in 2004. The last two years, they have lost to good Dunbar teams in the city playoffs. If Lane hopes to advance far in the city playoffs they will eventually face and have to beat a good south side team like Dunbar, Simeon, Robeson, or Hubbard.

Dream goal: Beat 1-2 suburban teams in the state playoffs, advance at least to the city semi-finals.

Girls Swimming

The girls swim coach the last few years, Josue Sabilon is out. The key will be for the new coaching staff to gel the girls. Lane Tech is going for an incredible 5th straight city championship. But as usual, Northside Prep and Whitney Young are waiting in the shadows to try to upset Lane. As for state, Lane Tech has at least three girls capable of qualifying for state: Morgan Monroe, Jill Schmucker, and Usah Sontep. Morgan Monroe finished 4th in the state in the 110 hurdles last spring and hopes to carry on some of her track success to the swimming pool.

Dream goal: win city, advance three individuals to state

16-inch softball

Lane Tech is again the favorite to win the city championship. It will be going for it's 6th city championship in 8 years. Former girls head softball coach Brent Bradish is now the head coach for the boys 16-inch softball team. Payton and Von Steuben will also be in contention for the city playoffs.

16-inch softball is strictly a Public League sport, thus there is no state playoffs.

Dream goal: win city

Girls Tennis

It will be difficult for any team to get past favored Morgan Park in this years city championship. Lane's best hope is to compete strongly enough versus strong tennis teams from Whitney Young, Lincoln Park, and Northside Prep.

Lane Tech does have a great individual player in junior Idia Omiagate. Omiagate scored state points for Lane last year by advancing to the third round of the consolation bracket.

Dream goal: Continued or greater performance by Idia Omiagate in the state playoffs.

Fall Sports Playoffs Preview Part 1

Picture_157

The girls volleyball team looks to make a strong push at this years playoffs. Pictured above are the varsity starters.

The fall city playoffs begin this week, The following is part 1 of 2 of the city and state playoffs preview. Enjoy...

Boys Golf

I think the last time Lane Tech won the city boys golf championship was in 1999. This might be Lane's best chance in years to win the city championship. They have already beaten many of their Public League foes, including defending city champions Payton. However, Whitney Young and Payton are equally confident they can win city as well.

As for state, Lane Tech has an individual in senior David Niemec, who has a chance to advance to the state tournament. Niemiec is one of the best golfers in the Public League and last year advanced to the state sectionals.

Dream goal: win city, advance David Niemiec to state tournament.

Girls Volleyball

Last year Lane Tech advanced to the city semi-finals. Along the way they upset top seeded Whitney Young. For Lane to win city this year, they will likely have to upset a higher seeded team like Payton. Payton is the cream of the Public League this year and i sos far undefeated in conference play and have beaten quality suburban opponent like Rolling Meadows during the regular season.

Lane's goal for the state playoffs should be to win a regional championship and then go from there.

Dream goal: top 2 finish at city, win a regional championship at state tournament.

Girls cross country

Lane Tech's run of 5 straight city championships is in serious jeopardy this year. Whitney Young has their strongest team they have ever had in girls cross country. Whitney Young is even ranked state wide is some publications. Meanwhile, Lane lost heavily to graduation form last year. On the plus side, participation is very high at Lane and Coach Roof feels the girls are improving every week. Northside Prep is also very deep and will be a force at the city championship.

Dream goal: Top 3 in the city

Boys cross country

Last year, Lane Tech got upset by Mather in the city championship. They look to retake city this year. They will be led by sophomore Kulayfi Haji. The key for Lane will be how quickly their injured runners recover. But the battle for the city championship will not be easy. Mather, led by city individual runner up Ivan Coronel, upset Lane last year and looks to repeat this year. Plus, Northside Prep, boosted by steadily improving young talent,is and will be a force this year. Look for a serious dog fight between Lane, Mather, and Northside Prep for the city championship.

Cross country has expanded to 3 classes this year in the state series. Fortunately, Lane Tech has been drawn in a favorable sectional (Niles West). Only the top 5 teams advance to state from each sectional, Lane Tech has a chance to advance to state this year. But all the stars will have to align: Their injured athletes will need to be fully healed and ready by sectionals, and they will need to seem continued improvement from their current varsity team. The bottom line, is that in order to advance to state, a team will need 3 runners running in the 15:00's and two running in the low 16:00's.

Dream goal: win city, top 7 in the state sectionals.

Victor_terrazas

Sophomore Victor "Flaco" Terrazas hopes to help the cross country team re-capture city.
