Lane Tech's Kyle Mitchell (6'1- 210lb, LB, jr) tries to get at elusive Simeon quarterback Robert Gregory (6-3, 185, so).
The Simeon defense dominated the first half of the game allowing no first downs from a Lane Tech offense that averaged 37 points a game the last 5 games. It carried into the second half as Simeon shut out Lane Tech 14-0 to win the Illini-Red Bird Conference.
Simeon was playing without star running back Horatio Banks, who did not play due to injury. Despite missing Banks, Simeon found enough offense from sophomore quarterback Robert Gregory. Gregory, who at 6-3, 185lb has the physically ability to develop into a solid quarterback. He displayed his arm strength several times in the game and showed his running ability by escaping Lane evaders numerous times to avoid sacks. In one play he even evaded Lane star defensive end Louis Pasat-Trinca (6-3, 230lbs, sr, DE- Iowa bound). I;ve seen Trinca-Pasat play defense for Lane the past three years, and it is rare to see an offensive player get past Trinca on a forsure tackle.
The Lane Tech running game never found rhythm and starting QB Tyler Routhier never got the passing game going. He had zero pass attempts in the first half.
At least Lane fans got to see an exciting half time show. Here are some pics:
Lane and Simeon next game will be the first round of the city playoffs. After that, state playoffs begin. Simeon is definitely in. Lane will need help to get in.
