CPS Track and Cross Country- Unstoppable!

Seth brought my attention to this video of a spontaneous dance at a recent music festival.

The video starts out with some random (or maybe a crazed?) dude dancing. But at about the one minute mark he is joined by a second and then a third guy (Guy #3). This incites a dance riot and pretty soon the scene is mobbed by dancers.

Watching this video got me thinking about the evolvement of boys track in the CPS. Not too many years ago, the CPS was literally a joke as far as state competition. Not only were there years in which the entire CPS scored zero state points in the entire meet but the times run by anyone in the city for the most part were awful. I'm talking about runners running 11:10 or worse and scoring at city in the 3200 meter run.

But something happened a few years ago. One by one programs started to get better. See like the video above, someone had to be the crazed guy #1 dancing while the rest of the CPS watched everyone else perform. Then a few other brave guys decided to join guy #1. Then pretty soon everybody joined and the movement became unstoppable.

CPS track and cross country is becoming unstoppable!

Video Interview - Craig Collins, Boys and Girls Track Coach at North Lawndale College Prep

Here is a video interview I took with Craig Collins on January 24, 2008 right before the season started. I know it's really late getting this published. But I hope it gives a glimpse of the state of affairs at North Lawndale College Prep from the west side.

Jonathon Acevedo - an emerging college football prospect for Lane Tech

Jonathon Acevedo
Jonathon Acevedo (6-0, 240lbs, class of 2010, Offensive Center)

I've talked a lot on this website about  Laken Tomlinson and Louis Pasat-Trinca, two of Lane Tech's most highly recruited college football prospects in a long time. But another Lane Tech football player is starting to garner some attention. His name is Jonathon Acevedo.

I first heard about Jonathon last year after talking to his parents Carlos and Loida Acevedo at a Lane Tech football game last fall. They mentioned their son Jonathon, who started on the line for Lane. When I heard the name Jonathon Acevedo, the name sounded familiar to me. I soon found out that Jonathon is the brother of Chris Acevedo who starred as an all-city lineman for Curie (class of 2003) and played football for Northern Illinois (starting all 13 games in 2006).

Just because of his genes, I knew that Jonathon had to be someone to watch out for. But at the same time I noticed that he wasn't as big as his much bigger brother Chris ( 6-5, 310lbs). I've met Chris, he is truly mammoth sized.

Jonathon played well and started for a solid Lane Tech city championship team. During the off season Tomlinson and Pasat-Trinca got some serious recruiting attention due to their performances at football camps and other off-season activities. Trinca gave a verbal commitment to Iowa last week and Tomlinson is reported to be leaning towards Ohio State University, Illinois, and maybe a couple other schools.

However, Acevedo also did well during the off season. So well that ESPN rated him a 63 on their high school football grading system. A score between 60-69 means that the player has the "ability to develop into a solid contributor at the Division 1 level."

"He is aggressive, smart and works to finish blocks", said ESPN regarding Acevedo.

The final grade is not in yet for Acevedo, a lot depends on how well he plays his senior year for Lane Tech and how much he develops his physical and athletic skills. Acevedo did just finish a pretty good track season. He is listed in the CPS Leaderboard for the Shot Put.

I know one thing, come football season, there will be a lot more fans and scouts attending Lane Tech games. Many of them will be watching Tomlinson and Trinca. Now, they should add Jonathon Acevedo to their list.

Kyles runs for Team Illinois in Midwest Senior Spotlight Meet

Chris Kyles 4
Chris Kyles (graduated senior for Lane Tech)

2009 Midwest Spotlight Track Meet Results

Chris Kyles just graduated earlier this month for Lane Tech. He followed up his 3rd place IHSA state meet finish in the 100 meter dash by participating in the 2009 Midwest Spotlight Track Meet. The senior only meet was held on Saturday, June 13, 2009 at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville.

Kyles ran the 100 meter dash and the 200 meter dash representing not Lane Tech but for "Team Illinois". In the 100 he finished in 4th with a time of 11.04. In the 200 he finished 5th in the 10 person race with a time of 22.41. Both times are well above his PR's in those events. Kyles also ran on the 2nd place 4x100 Meter Team Illinois Relay Team

"Kyles is probably going to run with the Zephyrs this summer", said Lane assistant coach Tony Jones. The Zephyrs is a track club.

"Kyles has not decided yet where he will run college yet but he plans on running faster as the summer progresses" added Jones.

Kyles was the CPS Boys runner to participate in the Midwest Spotlight Track Meet.

Lane Tech Distance Honor Roll Modified

I got this email from Eric Bonatz (Lane Tech class of 1986):

I saw my name pop up on the 1600 Meter list.  I have to give you my correct times for the State Prelims meet.  I believe it was 4:23 in 1986 (Eric Bonatz)  I will confirm this for you.  I think I have the newspapaer article.  I took 2nd in the State Qualifications.  I also ran the 800 and I will have to check those times.
