Lane Overmatched at Boys Bowling State Finals; Morgan Park Struts it's Stuff

Lane earned it's way to the Boys Bowling State Finals by winning a state sectional last week. So it went into the first day fo the Boys Bowling State finals as one of 24 teams hoping to finish in the top 12 in order to advance to the second and final day of the state tournament. It did not work out that way, as Lane finished 24th out of 24 teams. Morgan Park, the other Public League qualifier to make it to state was a bit closer with an 18th team finish. Morgan Park was only 6 teams short of finishing in teh top 12.

Kyle Huber (jr) finished the highest for Lane with a score of 1166. He also had a highest gaem for Lane when he scored a 257.

Day 1 Boys Bowling State Results

 

Morgan Park, Lane advance to state in Boys Bowling

The top two teams in the Public League, Lane and Morgan Park, advanced to the state finals in boys bowling. Lane advanced by winning the St. Ignatius sectional and Morgan Park advanced by taking 2nd in the Brother Rice sectional. Only the to two teams at Sectionals advanced to state. The Borther Rice and St. Ignatius Sectionals consisted of familiar Public League teams, but also included teams from Chicago's Catholic League. Lane Tech Boys Bowling is quietly producing good results in state sectional results. Lane has now advanced to the state tournament 5 times already this decade and winning sectionals twice (2006, 2009).

Morgan Park Holds off Lane to Take the Boys Bowling Title

Morgan Park held off a determined Lane Tech team to take the CPS Boys Bowling City Championship. Morgan Park has now won every city title in Boys Bowling since at least 2001. But this one was one of the closest as Morgan Park won by a slim margin when they scored 3,028 points to Lane Tech's 2,933. Morgan Park won on it's depth. Their normal number one bowler Duane Armour did not have the high game or the high series. But, Milton Marshall, stepped up by taking the high series of 640.

Armour, Morgan Park Poised to Take Boys Bowling City Championship

Morgan Park took it's first step to winning at least it's 6th straight boys bowling championship by winning the Boys Bowling Southside Sectional. Morgan Park, led by defending city champion Duane Armour easily took the Public League Southside sectional with 2,675 points over 2nd place Simeon with 2,517 points. Lane Tech, Taft, Clemente, and Simeon may challenge Morgan Park in the upcoming city championship.

Boys Bowling - learning from Morgan Park - plus preseason rankings.

I know that Bowling is a sport a lot of people don't follow. But, there are a lot of lessons to be learned in all sports.

Like in most non-basketball sports, the CPS is usually a non-factor when it comes to the post season state series against state competition.

One or two exceptions to that seems to be Lane Tech and Morgan Park. Lane seems to perform well due to sheer numbers and proximity to Waveland Bowl - just two blocks away.

But why does Morgan Park perform well?

Part of the reason is passion for the sport. Morgan Park does  things that other CPS schools do not do. like schedule opponents that are not from the CPS For example, earlier this week Morgan Park played against Andrew from Tinley Park.

But what Morgan Park gained is experience against non-CPS schools. Not only any school, but a state bowling power. Andrew finished 6th in the state last year. I admire Morgan Park for putting a state power like Andrew on their schedule.

By the way Morgan Park, finished only one place behind Andrew at sectionals last year.

Morgan Park is  bowling power not by accident. They intentionally design their program and schedule, to give their players the best chance of success. Every time you can watch a program like Andrew, you pick up little things that improve your game. And we all know it's the little things that make big things happen.  Maybe the other CPS schools can follow their model?

Morgan Park takes city boys bowling title; Lane 3rd

Tommy Nickels (sr) of Lane Tech and his teammates finished 3rd in the city.

Morgan Park continued it's dominace of boys bowling in the Public League. The Morgan Park Mustangs from the south side won another city boys bowling championship by bowling a combine team score of 2,878 points. Taft upset Lane to bring home a 2nd place trophy. Lane ends the season in third place. Morgan Park was led by state qualifier Duane Armour who bowled a perfect score of 300 on his way to the city individual championship with a series of 797 points. Morgan Park has now won city for at least the last 5 years in a row.

Boys Bowling just misses advancing to state

2006 Lane Tech Boys Bowling Sectional Championship Trophy.

Lane Tech took third place at the St. Ignatius Sectional for Boys Bowling. The top two teams advance to next week's state final. Therefore, Lane will not advance to next weekends state finals. Here are the results of the top 4 teams (out of at least 12 particpating schools)

Lane was led by senior Damaso Munoz. By virtue of his good individual score, he is an at large candidate to qualify for state as an individual.

Lane was hoping to advance to the state finals now for the 4th time in 5 years, but fell one place short. The boys bowling program at Lane is quietly putting together a string of great performances year in and year out. With this effort Lane's bowling team is showing that they are one of the top sports programs at Lane. Yes, bowling is considered a sport in the IHSA.

The Public League Boys Bowling city championship will be held the week after next weekends state meet. Due to Lane's performance thus far, they will surely be a top 3 finish favorite at the city championship. Other teams to watch out for at city include south side champion Whitney Young, always dangerous Morgan Park led by Duane Armour and sophomore Emmanuel Reeves, north side foe Foreman and Simeon led by junior Javon Dunson. Foreman upset Stagg, Fenwick, and Argo at state sectionals but barely missed advancing to state by finishing an impressive 3rd at Sectionals.
