David (Immaculate Conception) Slays Goliath (Lane Tech)!

069
Lane could not handle Matt Purdom, IC's 6-6 250lb center. Purdom is an all-state football anbd basketball player who will play football for Air Force next year.

Christmas cam two days early for Immaculate Conception as they did the unthinkable by beating the much bigger Lane Tech 62-50 in the second round of the boys varsity Luther North Tournament. Immaculate Conception, a small private school from Elmhurst, with an enrollment of 243 did not let their small enrollment size intimidate them from Lane Tech with an enrollment of over 4000 students. After beating the much heralded University High and Illinois State bound guard Zeke Upshaw yesterday, IC slayed Lane Tech from the Red-North Conference of the Public League.

Immaculate Conception was led by 6-6 250 lb center Matt Purdom, a football all-state player who led Immaculate Conception to the class AA foot state championship in the fall. Purdom proved too big and strong and scored a game high 23 points and pulled in 9 rebounds.

Lane, could not use it' superior athleticism to overtake IC. Meanwhile, IC's dan Muscienga found his rythm at the right time when he scored 9 of his 10 points in the key second quarter. IC, led by the hot shooting of Muscienga went on a 17-5 run in the second quarter to give IC a comfortable lead in which they never relinquished.

Lane was led Darrius Rhodes 19 points.

Lane was hoping to capture the Luther North title. Instead, they find themselves in the Consolation Bracket. Meanwhile, IC find itself in the semi-finals to be played Friday where they will face Oak Lawn who downed Guerin 45-39 in the quaterfinals. Oak Lawn is intimidating for it boasts 4 players 6-6 or above on their roster.

Lane Romps by Elmwood Park 58-46 at Luther North Tournament

Hill blockade
Lane Tech's Cameron Hill (6-5 sr) tries to obstruct the pass of Elmwood Park's Yaron Charnes (6-3 sr)

On December 22, 2008 Lane Tech and Elmwood Park faced each other at the first round of the 44th annual Luther North Holiday Tournament. Lane had complete control of the entire game and cruised past Elmwood Park 58-46. New Lane Tech head coach Nick Logalbo used a rotation of the entire bench to get his players valuable experience. He said "the best teams have solid benches". It was a complete team effort for Lane today - who was led by senior guard Darrius Rhodes 17 points. This is Rhode's first year playing for Lane's varsity and through his solid play has found his way in the Lane starting line up.

Here was Lane's starters for the day- an all senior lineup:

Guard - Anthony Cruz (5'8" sr)
Guard - Darrius Rhodes (5'9" sr)
Forward - Robert Smith (6'3" sr)
Forward -Kevin Dixon (6'3" sr)
Center/Forward- Cameron Hill (6'5" sr)

Lane was not able to stop Elmwood Park leading scorer Steve Casanova who had at least 20 points for the day to lead all scorers. But Lane's stifling defense pretty much held all of the rest of Elmwood Park in check.

After starting the season 1-4, Lane is now 5-4 after winning 5 games in a row.

Abdul
Steve Casanova - Elmwood Park's leading scorer brings the ball up the court versus Abdul Otenigbagbe (6-2 jr) of Lane Tech.

As expected Lane will play Immaculate Conception of Elmhurst in the Quarterfinals. Immaculate Conception- got by a stingy University High team 46-44 when University High missed a three footer at the buzzer.

Zeke and Matt
Matt Purdom (6-6 250 center)(left) and his Immaculate Conception teammmates barely got by a feisty University High team led by 6-6 Illinois State bound Zeke Upshaw (right). Purdom, an all state football player will play football next year for Air Force. Lane and Immaculate Conception face off in the second round, Tuesday, December 23, 2008, 3:30pm at Luther North High School.

Luther North Boys Varsity Basketball Christmas Tournament Schedule Preview

Picture 039

complete Luther North Christmas Tournament Bracket 2008

The last few years the Luther North Holiday Tournament had state ranked heavyweights Mt. Carmel and Zion Benton in the tournament. Those two completely rolled over this tournament filled with mainly class A opponents. So most of the field came into the tournament knowing they had almost no chance to win it. However, this year Mt. Carmel and Zion Benton have moved on to bigger tournaments playing with competition more to their level. Mt. Carmel is at the Pekin Tournament and Zion Benton is trying their luck at the prestigious Proviso West Holiday Tournament.

With those two behemoths out of the picture, the door is wide open for someone else to claim the prize at Luther North. Among the teams vying for at least semi-final berths will be Lane Tech, Stagg, Guerin, Oak Lawn, Maine East,Immaculate Conception,  new comer Antioch, and maybe even an improved Gordon Tech.  In other words, it is wide open for bevy of teams.

Maine East, led by brothers Shareq and Nuse Khan seems to be the favorite in the upper bracket. Ridgewood is improved but Maine East has too many weapons. 4th place finisher from last year Stagg will likely meet Maine east in the semi-finals but Stagg is rebuilding after graduating most of their stars from last year.

In the upper bracket the most intriguing 2nd round match up will likely be Lane Tech (enrollment over 4000) versus Immaculate Conception of Elmhurst (enrollment 234). On paper it seems liek David versus Goliath. But Immaculate Conception is blessed with a bevy of talent this year. IC  is fres off of winning a state championship in football and will have the services of 6-6 250lb all-state football and basketball player Matt Purdm. Purdom is an all-state lineman who will play football next year at Air Force but is also the star of an Immaculate Conception basketball team that has jumped out to a 5-2 record. Lane seems to be improved over last year's team that finished a surprising 3rd at last year's Luther North Tournament. Leading the way for the Indians will be 6-5 forward Cameron Hill who seems to finding his groove after a pre-saeason injury and scored 28 points earlier this year in Lane'swin over Senn.

Look for Maine East to play the winner of Lane Tech vs. Immaculate Conception in the championship game.

Here are my predictions

Lane Projected to finish near bottom in new Red-North

Anthony Cruz
Lane Tech's Anthony Cruz (5-8" - senior guard) - will be one of Lane's play developers in the 2008-09 season.

Basketball is the number one sport in the rough and tough Chicago Public League- one of the best conferences in the nation when it comes to basketball. Lane is in the newly aligned Red-North, home of the elite basketball teams of the North Side. Every team in the Red-North is considered a good team. Here is the Sun-Times projection of the teams and a preview of the Red-North in the 2008-09 boys basketball season.

RED-NORTH

Outlook: This may be the year that Foreman coach Terry Head makes his move. Von Steuben is good but young, and Lincoln Park is always going to be a threat. Payton has the best player in the conference. Senn is lurking.

The top five: Lavonte Dority, Foreman, G, jr.; Chris Eversley, Payton, F, sr.; Cortney Bell, Lincoln Park, F, sr.; Jamal Datzler, Von Steuben, G, jr.; Jaylyn Mosbey, Senn, G, jr.

Keep an eye on: Floyd Campbell, Von Steuben, F, jr.

Did you know? Darien Cummings of Senn is the son of former Carver great and Purdue All-American Lee Cummings and the nephew of former Carver great and DePaul All-American and NBA star Terry Cummings.

Quote: ''Everybody has a chance. There are no runaway trains rolling through the conference this year.'' -- Senn coach Tony Colston

Rough Start for Lane: Mt. Carmel 63 Lane 39

Lane Mt Carmel
Mount Carmel’s Tracy Abrams handles the ball against Lane’s Darrius Rhodes.(sun-times photo)

Mt. Carmel opened lot's of eyes last year when it upset top 2 state ranked Whitney Young in the state playoffs before finally falling to Evanston in the Supersectionals.

Mt. Carmel, after a breakout season last year, is proving once again that it is much more than a football school. It opened the season with a 63-39 rout over Lane Tech in the Lane Tech boys varsity Thanksgiving Tournament.

Lane was led by Cameron Hill's 12 points. Hill made a dramatic recovery after he injured himself in gym class in October. Lane will need Hill this year if it hopes to survive the rough Red-North.

Mt. Carmel was led by freshman Malcolm Hill- Bey with 12 points. Hill-Bey is already causing a stir and is one of the more talked about freshman in the Chicago area.

University of Illinois head basketball coach was in the stands to watch the game.
