Lane Beats Whitney Young in Summer League Baseball

Lane knocked off Whitney Young 4-2 in a summer league baseball game. I know it is just a summer league game. But the bottom line is that Lane beat the two time defending city champions. Whitney won the city championship last month, but part of the luster was lost when Lane and Whitney Young never got to meet each other during the city playoffs. Lane fell to Lakeview in the semi-finals, thus spoiling the much anticipated Lane/Whitney Young rematch in the city finals.

Baseball team to play Lakeview in city semi-finals

Lane Tech and Lake View will clash for the third time this season in the Chicago Public League Semi-Finals at UIC today (Monday). Lakeview opened some eyes when they humiliated Lane 20-1 earlier in the season, but Lane beat them in the other game. This game, however will be in a much much larger stage, the semi-finals of the Chicago Public League. The winner will play at US Cellualar Field for the city championship - where the likely opponent will be defending city champions Whitney Young. Whitney Young nipped Lane Tech last year to win the city crown and has been on a roll this season. Whitney Young is ranked #6 in the area according to the Sun Times.

Lane has battled throughout the year. Having to replace 7 starters from last year, Lane struggled a bit early during non-conference games but of late has seem to found it's groove. The team has rolled through mos tof the city playoffs and have won the close games when they need to. Lane is also doing well in the lower programs - with their sophmore team winning the city championship last week. Coach Szukala and his team are confident they can make it back to the city finals, but first they have to get past upstart Lake View.

Lane makes city baseball semi-finals

Lane squeaked by a pesky Von Steuben 9-8 to make it to the Public League semi-finals where they play upstart Lake View. Lane will not look past Lakeview because remember Lakeview hammered Lane 20-1 during the regular season. But this is now the playoffs and both teams are confident going into the game.

Lakeview 20 - Lane 1 : YOU READ IT RIGHT!!!

When I first saw the score Lakeview 20 Lane Tech 1, I thought it was a mis-print. But it was not. Not only did Lakeview beat Lane in this varsity baseball game they crushed them by a score of 20-1.

I'm not sure if Lakeview is that good, or if Lane has a rebuilding year this year. Maybe it is a combination of both. I do know that Lakeview has a 9-7 record but has a 7-1 conference record. Meanwhile Lane is 6-9 with a 4-2 conference record.

What has led to the Lakeview recent success? I think it starts with head coach Stavrakas. (The father of Lane Tech's girls softball coach George Stavrakas). Stavrakas made it his mission to improve Lakeview baseball when he took over the reigns. One of the first things he did was upgrade the team's schedule. Lakeview went from playing mainly lower level Public League Schools with not even the maximum level amount of games allowed - to scheduling a full schedule that includes scheduling suburban schools.
Stravakas, also put more pressure on Lakeview's athletic director to improving the program. It did not take overnight, but hard work has finally paid off for the Wildcats, and the result is a 7-1 conference record and a 20-1 win over Lane Tech. I'm not sure when the last time Lakeview beat Lane in a varsity baseball game, but I imagine Lakeview probably has not beaten Lane more than once or twice in the last 25 years.

Meanwhile, as a Lane fan I'm not panicking. I heard that Lakeview scored most of their runs off a freshman pitcher named Renaldo Gonzalez. So Lane did not have their top pitcher. Lane is still one of the city's top baseball programs and has nothing to be ashamed of in this lopsided loss. If anything, I hope it will give them more motivation to continue working harder. There are a couple teams in the Public League looking to make a name of themselves. Whitney Young is state ranked this year after a surprising state supersectional appearance last year - and now Lakeview has opened up a lot of eyes after this 20-1 triumph over Lane.

Q&A Baseball 2008: from coach Szukala

Szukala
Lane Tech Fan interviewed Lane Tech boys varsity baseball coach Jeff Szukala.

How did the base ball team do last year?

22 and 9. Eight loses by 1 run. Lost city title to Whitney young 1-0.Lost in regional final to Guerin prep

Q - Who are the key losses to graduation from last year?

4 year starter 3b Sam graebe 3 year starters ss josh colon RF Danny Serrano rhp Bryan Platt

Lane Tech graduated 18 out of 25 seniors including entire pitching staff

Q - Who are some of the key returnees for Lane this year?

2b turned shortstop David botello cf James glaesser currently injured rhp Antonio calderone and of/3b Rafael Rodriguez not to mention the 7th ranked sophomore in the entire state of Illinois by prep baseball report William (Anthony) Feliciano who started on the varsity as a freshman and is the best professional prospect I have ever had in my 13 years coaching at lane tech.

Q. What's new this year? Players that will make an immediate impact:

Jr 2b estaban abbey catcher Jr noel pagan lhp/1b soph Kyle Huber

Q- How does the schedule look like this year?

I have attached what I believe is the toughest non-conference schedule (COMING SOON)

Q - How does the rest of the Public League look like this year?

Whitney young is strong but in a different conference this year CPS split the super conference up into 2 divisions north and south. Going into this year lane tech is the 7 time defending champion of the super conference going 12-0 in 2007 and 62-3 overall vs. the public league in the last 3 years alone.

Q - In your opinion what do you think would make Lane Tech Base Ball in 2008 a success?

Although last season’s team graduated six starters, including four in the pitching rotation, the Indians will look to get off to a “fast” start as Coach Szukala feels this is one of the fastest teams Lane has ever assembled.  Speed and overall team defense are the main strengths the 2008 Indians possess.   The biggest question mark will be the overall pitching depth.

Expectations:

The expectations for Lane Tech Baseball are as high as ever.   Having won the Super Conference the last seven years in a row, the Indians expect to be the leader of the conference again.  With a heartbreaking loss in the City Championship last Spring, the Indians hope to regain the title this season.   The Indians also have higher expectations in terms of the

IHSA

State

play-offs.
