State Individual Wrestling Thread

Just got word that Ronzell Darling(sr) of Bowen defeated Kyle Atkins of Sycamore in the quarterfinals of the class 2A 113lb weight class. Darling is now guaranteed a top 6 individual finish.

Maxx Hubbard, Sterling (Newman Central Catholic), def. Mahmoud Shalabi, Chicago (Agricultural Science) with a pin at 3:46 in the quarterfinals of the 132lb weight class 1A.

Max Schneider(sr) of Lane Tech advances to 152lbs class 3A semi-finals with big 10-4 win over Tim Noverini of St.Charles North.

Rudolph Johnson, Chicago (Bowen), def. Jake Eckenrod, Mt. Zion, Dec 3-1 OT in 126lbs first round wrestlebacks in class 2A.

Lucas Joseph, East Peoria, def. Dequence Goodman, Chicago (Bowen), Dec 7-6 OT in the 220lb quarterfinals in class 2A.

Dequence Goodman, Chicago (Bowen), def. Nick Zelinsky, Richmond (R.-Burton), Dec 7-2 in the 220lb wrestlebacks in class 2A.

Chris Ballard, Chicago (Gage Park), def. Kyrin Tucker, Normal (Community West), Fall 1:27 in the 285lb wrestlebacks in class 2A.

4 CPS Wrestlers Advance to Individual Quarterfinals

The CPS sent an incredible 15 wrestlers to the IHSA state individual wrestling tournament. However after the preliminary round on Thursday, only 4 managed to get wins to advance to the quarterfinals.

Ronzel Darling, Chicago (Bowen), def. Nate Smith, Chicago (Austin Polytechnic), Fall 3:21
Dequence Goodman, Chicago (Bowen), def. Ryan Paige, Mattoon, Fall 1:30

3A
Max Schneider, Chicago (Lane), def. Jack Conner, Winnetka (New Trier), Fall :40

Darling, Goodman, and Schneider were favorites to win going into the prelims and all three delivered with pins within 3:21. The biggest surprise advancer from the prelims was Mahmoud Shalabi of Agriculture Science who won his bout 7-0.

Max Schneider(sr) of Lane pinned Jack Conner of New Trier. Schneider was injured last year so he did not participate at the state individual tournament his junior year. He is looking to  win state like he did his sophomore year. To do so, he will first have to get by Tim Noverini of St. Charles North in the quarterfinals. If he gets to the finals he may have to face undefeated and #2 state ranked(depending on the source) Brian Murphy of Glenbard North.

I got the following email from reader:

Can you write an article on the Agricultural Science high school baseball team? They are a hidden gem in the public league and I feel you should pay attention to them. I always see you write About Simeon and Lane baseball. I went to their practice today and I was highly impressed. They have. 2 strong juniors and 2 strong seniors.

I have a team picture attached. But yea they are a very good team. Out of the last 5 years, they won conference 4 times. Their 1st game will be against Morgan park. They have alot of top college prospects. Thank you for your time and I hope to hear from you soon.

Week 8 CPS Football Rankings....Chicago Conference Teams

1. Senn (7-0) (beat Schurz 34-6) - win clinches Chicago Big Shoulders Conference. Senn moves up to the big boys where they belong in the Illini conference next year. Senn is the best hope for a Chicago conference team to win a state playoff game.

2. Julian (5-2) (beat Corliss 58-14) - wins the Chicago Windy City Conference. Julian moves upto an Illini conference next year. Are the Jaguars back? We'll find out next year.

3. Hyde Park (4-3)(beat Urban Prep 22-6) - still in state playoff hunt after big win over Urban Prep.

4. Taft (6-1)  (beat Lake View) - bounced back with a win after a demoralizing loss to Senn the previous week.

5. Carver (6-1) (beat Phillips 53-36) - still in hunt for Chicago Great Lakes Conference after conference leader Bowen lost. Carver plays Bowen next week.
