Robeson Gives Joliet Catholic All it Can Handle

Robeson gave state super power Joliet Catholic all it can handle in a 34-26 effort. Joliet Catholic had to recover an onside kick attempt in the final seconds to preserve the victory.

Robeson kept the game close the entire game. In the third quarter Robeson actually had a chance to take the lead but their 2 point conversion failed and Joliet Catholic led only 13-12.

Robeson quarterback Donte Davis(sr) threw two touchdown passes to Maurice Daniels(sr, 6-3, 210lbs). Devon Sanders(sr) had a great game on both side of the ball. Fans got a chance to see why Purdue made Sanders an offer as he had numerous tackles and big plays playing linebacker and he added two rushing touchdowns.

A great effort by Robeson. After seeing their offense perform with great efficiency I have to rank thier offense near the top of the CPS with Simeon (and maybe Harper). This was a great result for the CPS and I'm sure statewide people will notice that score.

CPS Seeking a Waiver in the Event of a Strike

The CPS has asked the IHSA to allow fall sports to continue to practice and play games even during a strike. Current IHSA rules state that a school cannot hold practice or participate in games. But if the CPS is granted permission, then CPS school will be able to continue on as normal.

On a side note CPS Charter Schools will continue on as normal regardless if there is a strike or not. See, CPS charter schools have teachers that are not part of the Chicago Teachers Unions. Maybe, that is why the Chicago Teachers Unions hate charters schools so much. See Charter Schools do what they were hired to do. That is focus on teaching not on squabling.

Week 2- Thursday Scoreboard

Brooks Dominates Kenwood 43-6. Brooks quarterback Ahmad Bradshaw(sr) ran for 3 touchdowns on runs of 20 yards, 25 yards, and 19 yards and added a 50 yard touchdown pass to Dakota Starks(jr) to lead the romp over upstart Kenwood. Brooks kicker Jesus Miranda(jr) hit two field goals. The Brooks defense was stout for almost the entire game. Kenwoods only score came on an 80 yard screen pass that went for a touchdown late in the 2nd half. Brooks led 20-6 at the half. In the 2nd half it was all Brooks. Both team are now 1-1 to start the season. Brooks plays a big game next week against downstate Rock Island at Gately. My opinion of Brooks has raised even more after their perfromance today. This is a legit team.

The Mather Effect

The CPS has always been somewhat competitive in boys soccer. But it was not until Mather broke through last year with a dominating state championship that has really got more teams to believe.

Mather's win last year seems to be giving more schools hope and that maybe they can do close to a Mather like performance.

Even teams like Amundsen seem suddenly optimistic. Consider the following quote from Amundsen head coach Alex Perez:

“When we played Mather (in the sectional championship), I was amazed at their talent,” Perez said. “That is the standard that Mather has put out there. For us, for Lane (Tech), Lake View, all the Public League teams. If Mather can win the state title, any city school can be successful. The bar is set high now. We can get (to the state title game) if we play well as a team and play aggressive, fast, and strong.”

The results have been favorable for the CPS so far this season. Just look at some early season results:

Game of the day: Brooks (0-1) vs Kenwood(1-0)

What a match up. Brooks has been the talk of the state after their near upset of 2011 state semi-finalist Kaneland. In that game Brooks led 24-6 in the 3rd quarter before finally falling 25-24. 2012 was the year that Brooks fans have been talking about for years. I wrote an article two years ago to look out for Brooks in 2 years. Brooks has 4 year starting quarterback Ahmad Bradshaw(sr), massive lineman Dequan Sain(sr, OL, 6-7), Khalil Simmons(sr, S), and running backs Cleveland Clark and Josh Smith.

Meanwhile, Kenwood is an equally story of its own. I started the season with almost no pre-season expectations for Kenwood because they graduated so much talent from last year. But after their 30-24 upset over suburban TF North, my eyes quickly opened on Kenwood.

My feel is that Brooks will have too much for Kenwood and they won't make as many mistakes as TF North. But if Kenwood happens to spring an upset, the talk will immediately turn from Brooks to Kenwood.


Westinghouse Warriors

Westinghouse(0-1) vs Harlan(0-1)
Any time a mid-level Chicago conference team plays an upper level Illini conference team, the Chicago Conference team always has a bit of chip on their shoulder. In this case Westinghouse is a team itching to say they belong in the Illini conference. The best way for Westinghouse to prove they belong is to actually beat an Illini conference team. They'll have their opportunity against Harlan.

Westinghouse has the talent to be able to run with Harlan. They have 6-5 quarterback Eugenio Dejesus(sr), talented running back James Graham(sr), and lineman Dequan Smith(sr, 6-4, 265lbs).
All of them are pre-season Chicago conference players.

Harlan is led by Division 1 College recruit Kijana Evans(6-3, 290lbs, sr, OL).

Both teams are looking for their first win after good efforts in week 1 losses to suburban teams.

Jones College Prep Beats 3 Time State Champion Belvidere North

Jones had 5 runners in the top 12 to win the 8 team Sycamore Invitational. These weren't just any old teams. Jones defeated 3 time defending state champion Belvidere North and Normal University. Both are class 2A powerhouses. Everyone knows of Belvidere North, but is Normal is no slouch as they finished in the top 4 at state in the last 4 years including 3rd last year.

One of the key runners for Jones was St. Rita transer Peter Schaible(jr).  He finished as the critical 5th man for Jones with a big 13th place overall finish with a time of 16:17.

The Jones show will be taken at even higher level this year as they will be running at the prestigious Palatine Invitational this year. The Palatine Invite is always loaded and has teams such as York, Palatine, New Trier, Barrington, Loyola, Lake Zurich, etc.
