Lane Tech Cross Country
Fredy Cam-Koo broke out with a personal record 4:51.89. Despite that good time, he still has to fight big time just to make the very competitive top 7 for Lane Tech.
losses - Sean Mythen (JV city champ), Michael Morin(JV city runner up), David Timlin(4th at city), Lucas Beltran(6th at city), Danny Zimny-Schmitt(12th at city), Kevin Perez(14th at city)
returnees - Andrew Figueroa (4th @ freshman city), Christian Badillo (11th at soph city), David Schmieg (14th at soph city), Matthew Haak(16th at soph city), Luke Chlohisy(21st at soph city),Adalberto Aviles(23rd at soph city), Marcelo Burbano (8th at varsity city), Jon Vara (10th at varsity city), Mansur Soleman(19th at varsity city), Brandon Zimny-Schmitt(13th at JV), Fredy Cam-Koo (15th at JV city)
At this point of the season it is difficult to accurately predict who will be in Lane's top 7. Graduated are mainstays the past few years David Timlin, Lucas Beltran, Kevin Perez, and Danny Zimny-Schmitt. They had a great run last year winning city and qualifying for state.
Only 3 runners from their top 7 at city last year return this year. They are Marcelo Burbano(sr), Jon Vara(jr), and Mansur Soleman(sr). Burbano and Vara, 8th and 10th at city last year, will make Lane's top 7 for sure. The other 5 spots face fierce competition. Even veteran Mansur Soleman(sr), who was all-city in cross country last year with a 19th place city finish, is not guaranteed a top 7 spot. That is because there are at least 13 guys who have realistic chances of making a top 7 spot. I say at least because with the depth that Lane has, someone few have ever heard of could emerge into a serious force.
Case in point, let's look at Lane's past track season. Going into the season few outside of Lane have heard of David Schmieg, Pavlo Hutsalyuk, and Miles Strong-Austin. By the end of track all 3 have developed into their own. Schmieg went from being an 11:30 type 2 miler in cross country to a low 2 minute type 800 meter runner. Miles-Strong-Austin went from being a 5:40's type miler in cross country to a 5:00 miler by the end of track. Hutsalyuk went from not even running cross country to running a 4:35 1600 in track.
If I were to make a projection for Lane's top 7 it would look like this:
