F/S 800 meter outlook

Adalberto Aviles(so) of Lane Tech is my pick to win the 800 meter run.

800 meter run finalist and Neilski predicted order of finish

1. Adalberto Aviles(so) - Lane Tech

Adalberto Aviles(so) is my favorite to win because he ran the fastest regular season time out of all the finalist. He ran a 2:06.89 at the Niles North Invite. His biggest challengers will likely come from either Juan Castillo(so) of Jones, Sam LaSota(fr) of Payton, or Luis Gomez(so)  of Lake View. Castillo is part of a deep frosh-soph Jones squad that had at least 5 freshman or sophomores break 2:13 this year. Castillo was the top freshman 800 finisher at last year's frosh-soph meet when he finished 5th with a time of 2:10.55. LaSota is part of a Payton team with lot's of good young talent. LaSota is tall and has very good closing speed. Luis Gomez told me he would have loved to run the mile in addition to the 800, but he is only doing the 800. Also look out for Jones and Lane's #2 runners in Tony Gonzalez of Jones and Pavlo Hutsayuk(so) of Lane. Both have good speed and could do better than expected.

Robert White(so) of Calumet is someone whose name keeps popping up. I thought he was a hurdler, having qualified for both hurdling events. But apparently he can also run the 800.

This is going to be a very fast race.You could see the winner running about a 2:05-2:06 and have about 4-5 runners break 2:10.

After the Boys Frosh-Soph Prelims it is too close to call.

7 teams are in contention for a top 2 trophy:

Jones
Northside

Brooks

I put the above list in order that I feel they will finish. The top spot is too close to make a firm prediction. When the meet comes you never know what will happen.

Neilski's Boys Varsity Mock City Meet

Jones Showing Some Muscle in the 400, 4x400

Josh Mason(sr) captain of Jones College Prep boys track team. Mason ran a 51.5 in the 400, one of the top 400 times ever run for Jones.

Everyone knows that Jones has a top notch distance program. However, they are layering on 400 runners to their distance machine.

At the St. Ignatius Invite #2 (results), Jones revealed their 400 strength.

• Josh Mason(sr) ran a 51.5 in the 400. That is the top if not one of the top times in the 400 ever for Jones. That time also puts him squarely in the 400 Leaderboard.
• The 4x400 relay team ran a 3:36.8. That is 7th in the Leaderboard.

I know the above times are not spectacular- even compared to CPS standards. However, what they do represent is a breakthrough for Jones. Jones is starting to show that it is capable of more than distance.

Jones has stockpiled so much distance talent that not all of them can run the distance spots available. The natural progression is the 400 meter dash.

As for the city meet this coming Saturday, Jones will score high - with two people in the 3200 meter, 1600 meter, maybe the 800 meter, and now suddenly they are on the periphery of scoring in the 400 and 4x400.

Lane, Dunbar, Phillips, Jones all look good at Frosh-Soph Prelims

Ben Satterfield(so) and Phillips looked very strong today in sprints. It seemed like it was all Phillips blue in the top spots of practically every sprint event.

I just got back from the CPS Frosh-Soph Prelim meet at Hanson. Here is my quick take on how some of the teams performed.

Jones-Distance Kings
Jones is looking to look like the Lake Park of distance. Jones easily qualified two runners each in the 800 and 1600. Plus they had the fastest time in the 4x800 relay with an unofficial 9:03 and got freshman Mark Protsiv qualify in the 400. Add, the fact that they will surely score 2 runners very high in the 3200 meter you got the makings of some points in the finals.

Phillips- Sprints Specialties
Phiilps is starting to look like it has the makings of being the Phillips has one of the best if not the best frosh-soph sprint suad in the city. I think Jones qualified 1 if not 2 individuals in the 100, 200, 400. And I think they qualified all the sprint relays 4x1, 4x2, and 4x4. I'm sure they Phillips really hit the weight room, because their guys are some of the leanest and most muscular freshman and sophomores that I have seen. One runner looked like he was 19 and built like Mack Truck. (I would not want ot play them in football).

Dunbar- Field Extraordinaires
Dunbar has by far the best throws team. Freshman Nevell Floydand Jason Dawson were 1-3 in the discus. Carzelle Elicke(so) looked solid in qualifying in the long jump and triple jump. He also qualified for the 300 hurdels finals.  Also, I heard they had 2 qualifiers in the high jump. The Mighty Men qualified in almost all the sprint relays and the 100 led by sprinter Demoria Harris(fr).

Lane Tech- overall
The results are not in yet, but it looks like after Prelims Lane Tech will have the most overall qualifers. The Indians qualified 2 runners in all the distance events, took 2nd in the 4x8, got in with almost all the sprint relays, and got enough qualifiers in hurdles and field events to make them probably the favorite going into the finals. 

Wanner Knight Invite at Prospect-Results

David Timlin(sr) of Lane Tech wins the 1600 meter with a CPS outdoor best 4:21.19. That is also a modern day Lane Tech school record beating Kulayifi Haji's time of 4:21.97 in 2010. We haven't seen these kind of times for Lane since the 1960's and 1970's when they were running the metric mile.

Lane Tech 2nd in the 4x800 at Prospect- Unofficial 8:02.7

1 lap into the 4x800, Marcelo Burbano is ahead of some of the state's best 4x800 teams in Lyons Township, Niles West, York, and Hersey. Lane had a valiant effort in finishing about 1 second behind champion Prospect. Lane's team consisted of Marcelo Burbano, Lucas Beltran, Jon Vara, and David Timlin. Timlin held off Niles West's Omar to give Lane the 2nd place finish in one of the most prestigious races of the evening.

Who will win the frosh-soph 100?

Michael Hardman(fr) of Lane Tech is a contender.

Devonte Swope of Curie is my favorite. The 2 Phillips runners seeded ahead of him have hand timed 100 seeds. They are not proven yet and have run mainly CPS relay type meets. Swope did well at FAT timed Sabre Invite. Although, Phillips is much improved as a program and may surpise.

Michael Hardman of Lane is a possibility though I am not sold on him yet as the city's top frosh-soph sprinter. I feel he will finish 3rd-6th. Darnell Cockwell of Simeon and Damaria Harris of Dunbar are very fast football players and could be in the mix.

I don't know too much about the Whitney Young sprinters Antoine Byndum and William Lewis seeded at 11.74 and 11.84. Nor do I know much about Lake View's Mitchell Buenafe seeded at 11.84.

Juwane Wells of Robeson is seeded at #28, but based on past history, I have to give Robeson's #1 100 meter runner a much better finish than that.
