No matter what happens Bowen is already a CPS success story. They finished 2nd in the CPS wrestling tournament, qualified 5 wrestlers to state, placed 3 wrestlers in the Individual tournament, and now advanced to the state dual tournament class 2A quarterfinals. There are only 8 teams remaining and Bowen is one of them.
To get here they had to win the Chicago Washington Regionals, then they beat a good King team (that had 9 sectional qualifiers) rather handily 58-15 at the sectional semi-finals.
Now, they are in the elite 8. One more win guarantees that elusive state trophy. For Bowen to have a chance their big 3 of Dequence Goodman(sr-3rd at state), Ronzell Darling(sr-5th at state), and Rudolph Johnson(jr-6th at state) will have to take care if business. Then, they will have to have big days from their other wrestlers like Ronnie Gibbs(sr) and Jacky Dezir(sr).
Bowen's feat will not be easy. Antioch got by a good St. Patrick program 39-30 in the sectional semi-finals. Antioch does it with depth. Unlike Bowen who had 3 individual placers, Antioch did not have any individual placers at last week's state individual tournament. Antioch did have 6 wrestlers advance to state out of sectionals.
This is going to be a tough match. Last year, Lane Tech fell just short in the class 3A quarterfinals by falling to Harlem 34-32. Only 2 CPS teams have ever placed (top 4) at the dual team state wrestling tournament (Lane Tech twice), Bowen has given the CPS another opportunity.
No matter how good Bowen does against CPS schools, Bowen will not have the reputation of belonging until they beat a good suburban or downstate school. This match against Antioch will go a long way in determining if Bowen belongs.
