Muscle bound Justin Smith(sr) of Payton ran a 50.91 at sectionals last year.
The 400 meter is shaping up to be the elite event for the CPS this year. Here is the 400 indoor leaderboard as of last Sunday. It does not include the President's Day meet at DeLaSalle:
| 52.97 | Michael Gulan(sr) | Von Steuben | Proviso West (2/19/12) |
| 53.49 | Mac Melto(sr) | Northside Prep | Lonnell Poole Invitational |
| 53.85 | Cywettnie Brown(sr) | Simeon | Lonnell Poole Invitational |
| 54.38 | Malik Lee(jr) | Brooks | Lonnell Poole Invitational |
| 52.0 | Charlie Wiley(sr) | Kenwood | U-High Invitation Only Meet A |
| 54.9 | Deshaun Jordan(jr) | North Lawndale | Niles West City Meet #1 |
| 55.1 | Wesley Mills(sr) | Kenwood | U-High Invitation Only Meet A |
| 55.7 | Terry Magee(so) | North Lawndale | Niles West City Meet #1 |
The list does not even have Stedman Foster(sr) of Morgan Park, Dakari Howard(sr) of Whitney Young, Spencer Williams(sr) of Calumet, and Justin Smith(sr) of Payton. All of them are elite CPS 400 meter runners.
Nor does the list have anyone (yet) from defending city champion Lane Tech who has at least 3 runners that could be added to the 400 Leaderboard if they ran a competitive indoor 400. Remember, Lane returns 3 runners from it's 2011 state qualifying 400 meter relay team that ran a 3:23.69 at sectionals last year.
Others that could find themselves in the Indoor Leaderboard list by the end of the indoor season include but not limited to: Byron Kelly(jr)of Brooks, LaZyrick Middlebrooks (jr) of Bulls, Timothy Warren(sr) of Jones, Yusef Hood(sr)of Kenwood, and I'm sure I am missing a few more.
Then there are the young guns. The frosh-soph indoor leaderboard already lists 7 runners who have broken 60 seconds on the frosh-soph 400 leaderboard. Last year there were 9 runners at the end of the indoor season on the frosh-soph 400 leaderboard. We could easily hit 9 by the next round of meets and there is still over a month to go in the indoor season.
Some early season surprises include: David Schmieg(so) of Lane who busted out with a 56.0 at OPRF, Kenneth Crosby of Brooks who ran a CPS FAT season indoor best so far of 58.74, Alex Pei(fr) of Whitney Young who ran a 57.1, and Tom Frejowski(fr) Northside Prep who some are calling the next Mac Melto after he ran a 57.5.
Tom Frejowski training with Melto? ...we're going to have 4 more years of this then?

David Timlin ran 53.6 for yards at Thornwood on 2/4 on a 160y track. That converts to 53.3 for 400m (yards are 402.3 meters).
