Thank you to creamrich for providing great footage from the Glenbard South Raider Chess Tournament last Saturday. Most of this video features the exciting final round match between undefeated (in the tournament) Glenbrook South and defending state champion Whitney Young. As you can see, Whitney Young had to sweat out a win. The very deep Whitney Young took the first 4 wins from the bottom 4 boards (boards 5,6,7, and 8). Then Glenbrook South went on a rally winning boards 2,3, 4. The match came down to the teams Board #1's. A match up between Whitney Young National Master Sam Schmakel(so-2237 chess rating) and Gauri Manoj(sr-2300 chess rating) of Glenbrook South (notated game). Manoj is the defending state board 1 state chess champion. Schmakel came up with an upset to give Whitney Young the victory to give Whitney Young a slim 38-30 win. See how the crowd gathers at the 1:45 mark.
Whitney Young came up with the win this time, but I will say this. Glenbrook South beat Whitney Young in 3 of the top 4 boards- any team that can do that to Whitney Young is a team to reckon with!
Alright, I think im speaking for the whole cps right now: we dont give a fuck about chess!!! Lets keep it with real sports please. Fuck these nerds

serious question. can you get a chess scholarship?
Posted by: chess | January 21, 2012 at 01:04 AM
No you can't get a chess scholarship. It's an activity like drama, debate, and journalism. THough, as you can probably expect, the top chess players usually have no problem getting into the college of their choice.
To the ignorant first commenter, go practice on your sport because your sport has a lot of catching up to do against suburban and downstate competition. The cps has two of the top 5 chess teams in the state. You may not give a Fu** about chess but chess in Illinois is one of the more popular activities. The state chess tournament next month is one of the biggest chess tournaments in the nation.

actually you CAN get chess scholarships. A $10,000 scholarship will be on the line in the mvp tournament at the end of the year

Alright, good for all those tapented chess players, you sit on your ass, and think. Try to doing something that requires muscles, hard work, and dedication. I have absolutely no respect for you and you dont deserve to be on this website. Dont argue, chess is an activity, a lazy one, and fuck anyone who thinks different.

lol @4real you are probably the most ignorant person on this site. Chess players just like athletes dedicate a lot of time into improving. They practice for hours everyday and they train meticulously trying to remember different aspects of the game. And just because chess players don't use their muscles they do use their brain which is just as exerting. Did you know an average high school chess tournament takes 12 hours? That's half a day playing chess and having your brain working the whole time and because of that most players suffer from fatigue and get headaches. The average time a football player spends on the field? Less than 30 minutes. IMO you're just a hater because not only does your school suck at chess but the sport you're in probably can't even qualify for state. Obviously the hard work chess teams like WY and NS put in is paying off while the other sports are lacking so you know what just be glad the cps has a sport/activity that represents them in a positive light and if you can't do that then u mad bro?

You must be a very talented chess player, sorry I hurt your feelings, you must be very emotional

To @4real. unless you play basketball for simeon, or are a nigerian that played soccer for mather, you probably suck at whatever sport you do and will never win a national, state or even city championship like these kids from WY have, some of them playing other sports like soccer, tennis and bowling.
