Christian Kavouras(so- 2nd from left) takes a peek at the camera as Northside Prep (left) competes against Hubbard in 3rd round action of the CPS chess championship today.
I am hearing unofficial results that Northside Prep stunned defending state champion Whitney Young in the CPS chess championship. Both teams had their full squads.
Northside Prep breezed through the first three rounds against Lake View, Lincoln Park, and Hubbard to set up the showdown between the 2 state chess powers.
Whitney Young had easy wins against Kelly, Lane Tech (68-0), and Jones before the final against Northside Prep.
I believe this is the first time in school history that Northside Prep has beaten juggernaut Whitney Young in a chess match.
If anyone has any more details of this result please comment.
Whitney Young won boards 1,5,6, and 8. Northside won boards 2,3,4, and 7. The match came down to Jayce Feiger on board 4 and he once again came up with a clutch win with 10 seconds left on his clock. The other close game that was left was on board 7 with freshman Slavisa Djukic winning with under 5 minutes left. The match started with WY taking boards 8 and 6 to jump to a 13-0 lead

The graduation of 3 of Whitney Young's top 5 boards from last year's state championship team hurt them. With so much talent ahead of him, Whitney Young had the luxury of playing veteran player Christian Pena at Board 7 for Whitney Young's state team last year. This year, Pena has been moved up to Board 4. The results show for themselves. At Board 7, Pena went 7-0 at the state meet last year to be the state champion in Board 7. Playing at Board 4 this year, is a whole other story. Pena has struggled losing to Glenbrook South sophomore Ross Steinberg at the Raider tournament final round and now losing to Northside Prep's Jayce Feiger in the CPS finals.
With the state meet coming up, Northside Prep will surely be seeded ahead of Whitney Young and have a relatively easier road at state.
This was a big win for Northside Prep.

Also deserving special mention are sophomore Christian Kavouras defeating Charles Swan on Board 2 and junior Edmond Jay defeating Jimi Akintonde on Board 3. Both outstanding performances against very strong opposition.
The Northside JV 5-board team also won the CPS JV Championship today.
