Frosh-Soph City Prelims

Brooks, Robeson, Mather, and Lane look strong after Prelims

Daniel Medrano(so) of Brooks leads this heat of the 110 high hurdles. Medrano, a tall (about 6'4") guy and Brooks look like the team to beat after the Prelims. Medrano qualified in the 110HH, 300IH, and the 800 meter run. Teammate Byron Kelley (so) was a beast as well seemingly winning every heat he ran.

Devon Sanders(so-left) of Robeson leads and eventually won in this semi-final prelim of the 100 meter dash. Sanders was the top qualifier in the 100 meter dash with a time of 11.73. He also qualified in the 200 meter. In the center of the picture is Paul Ukaegbu(so) of EPIC Academy a small two year old school on the south side. Ukaegbu, a soccer player also qualified for the finals in the 100 meter.

Lane 8:06 in the 4x800 at Prospect!

Lane Tech's Lucas Beltran(jr- left) finishes just behind York's Hedeman (Tom?) to finish in 8:06 at the Prospect Invite. David Timlin(jr) ran a 1:54 3rd leg to put Lane in the hunt with one leg to go. Prospect won the race in an unofficial 7:54.

Matt Rowe(jr-left) is shown here standing next to Prospect superstar Nick Batcha who won the 100, 200, and finished 2nd in the Long Jump, and was top 3 in the 400. Rowe and Antonio Abreu(so) of Lane Tech made the finals of the 200 meter dash.

Track Royalty

The whole world has their eyes on the royal wedding. Likewise (ok not 2 Billion people), the CPS track world will have their eyes on the CPS frosh-soph and varsity city meets this week.(royalwedding.com photo)

Using the theme of royalty, below is my take on the top 2 athletes from some select teams to keep an eye on during championship week.


Brian Carter(jr) and Jamal McNeeley(so)- Kelvyn Park
Carter and McNeely from the top 1-2 sprint combo in the city and possibly in the state class 2A. If they ran the 100 and 200, they could both finish in the top 3 at city.

David Timlin(jr) and Marcelo Burbano(so) - Lane Tech
These two have developed nicely from last year and are now the face of Lane Tech track and cross country. A year ago Burbano was running in the freshman city championship running about a 5:10 mile. Now both are part of the CPS distance elite and will play major roles if Lane is to win a 6th straight city championship.

Dakari Howard(jr) and Eric Shan(jr) - Whitney Young
Both are maybe one year away but any coach would love to have them on their team. Howard can run any sprint event and do any jump event. He is the Group A Indoor city champion in the 55 meter dash. Shan has run a 4:41 mile this year.

Marcus Griffith(sr) and Rahim Foster(sr) - Mather
The best hurdler pair in the city. The pair have a chance to finish 1-2 in both hurdles event at city. Mather is quietly improving every week. If they make another leap this weekend, I may even upgrade them as a city championship contender. A large part of that will be based on the performance of Griffith and Foster.

Devonte Elzy(sr) and Cywettnie Brown(jr)- Simeon
Elzy and Brown are the biggest reasons why there's talk of a Simeon top 3 if not better finish at city. Elzy and Brown will come into the city meet as one of the favorites for the title in the long jump, triple jump, and high jump. They can also run sprint relays.

Mac Melto(jr) and Wesley Laytham(sr)
These two have been the biggest contributor to Northside's rise in track. Melto is one of the state's top 400 meter runners. Laytham will try to break up the Lane 800 machine.

 

UIC Scoops up CPS Soccer Talent

All-City Emmanuel Guzman of Lane Tech, Jesus Torres of Little Village, and Piotr Lagowski of Taft to play at UIC

My #1 CPS soccer player of the year Piotr Lagowski of Taft.

UIC got a recruiting bonanza of local soccer talent when they got Piotor Lagowski (Forward) of Taft, Jesus Torres of Little Village, and Emmanuel Guzman(Midfielder) of Lane Tech to commit to play for the UIC Flames.

I ranked Guzman and Lagowski #1 and #2 in my pre-season player of the year rankings.

Lagowski, was my CPS soccer player of the year. He has an amazing leg, is an incredible scorer who can score for long distance, and most importantly a great kid who you can easily talk to.

Torres, was a high scoring forward from a Little Village team that had only one loss in the regular season, advanced to the CPS Quaterfinals, and came up with a big victory over Montini in the regional semi-finals of the state playoffs.

Guzman, came into his senior year as the most talked about CPS player. However, an injury sidelined most of his senior year. Still, he is a great pickup for UIC.

Sprinters at the Frosh-Soph Meet

Little known (for now) Javier Morrison (so) of UIC College Prep is a sprinter really looking to make a name for himself. He will likley run at the frosh-soph meet.

The CPS frosh-soph prelims are this Saturday. I do not have the formal entries yet but here is my take on some of the top frosh-soph sprinters. Of course when the entrie are released this list will be updated.

Am I missing someone?

I may be going on a bit of a limb here, but I feel that out of the group that will likely run at the frosh-soph meet I think that Javier Morrison(so) of UIC will be someone that could really emerge. Morrison, the starting running back on the UIC football team (yes they have a team), has really bulked up since last year. He is much bigger, stronger, and faster. UIC has not run too many meets this year but in one meet he finished a close second to talented Jamal McNeely- another talented sophomore.

Also keep an eye out on Lane's Eric McMiller and Amery Fredricks, and Westinghouse's Absolom Boyd.

If I were to rank the top 4 sprinters in the group likely to run at the frosh-soph meet it would look something like this:

Prospect Time!

Lane varsity will be running at the Prospect Invite this Friday night vs York, Niles North, Lyons, and more!

Lane's 4x800 team is seeded with an 8:06 mark. This means they will likely be running their top 800 dogs: Lucas Beltran(jr)(above), Kevin Perez(jr), David Timlin(jr), and Marcelo Burbano(so).

Prospect Performance List

Oscar Medina to run at Prospect Invite

Senior all-state class 2A cross country distance star Oscar Medina of Lake View.

Oscar Medina is already proven. He finished 8th in the class 2A state cross country meet last fall with a time of 14:55 for 3 miles. He also ran a 4:25 1600 meter run indoors in the IPPT meet. But those times were against some of the best class 2A runners.

Now, fortunately for track fans we will see how Oscar can do against some of the best distance runners in class 3A- the state's biggest class. I just got word that Oscar Medina will be running at the prestigious Prospect Invitational this Friday night. Oscar, will be the sole representative for Lake View and will be running the 3200 meter run.

York, Hersey, Prospect, Naperville Central, Niles North, Lane Tech, Cary Grove, and others are usually at this meet. In other words - distance schools. The heat sheet will be out soon. At that point, we will know who will be there for sure.

I do know that the 3200 meter run is always fast at Prospect. If the weather holds up look for the winner to be in the low 9:00's. Let's see what Oscar can do.
