Numbers are way up at Calumet Perspectives due to a co-op program. The way things are going I'm predicting a conference win, they could be the "Al Raby and Bogan" of 2010. (photo: Brandon Morgan)
"yea im going 2 start on varsity", said Lonnie.
He will have support.
Starting with head coach Terry Jones. Here is what someone said about Jones:
" (Terry Jones, 1991 City Champion, Robeson) former defensive coordinator Morgan Park". If those stats are true, he comes from some great football pedigree. Robeson and Morgan Park are some of the best football programs in the city.
Spencer Williams (jr) is one of the faster running backs in the south side. He is just one of the speed weapons in a vastly improved Calumet team.
Then there are the players. Calumet will have a two headed running back attack. In addition to Lonnie, there is also Spencer Williams (jr- 5-9, 160lbs). Williams had extensive playing time last year and is also very fast and strong.
Quarterback William Gibbs (6-1;175lbs, jr) returns. Gibbs, is not your typical CPS running quarterback. Last year as a sophomore starter he threw for over 700 yards, including a 197 yard 3 touchdown game in a win over Payton last year.
Defensively, Calumet will be led by all-conference Dionta Davis (6-0, 225lb, LB/RB) and linebacker Devonte Warnsby (5-10, 165lbs). Warnsby also can be a dangerous kick returner.
We also know that numbers are way up at Calumet. Last year,Calumet had 50 varsity players and over 40 lower level players. I hear this is attributed to a co-op program between the south loop and far south side campuses.
The result of good coaching and numbers (always a good combination) was an undefeated Inter-city 2 conference record with an average margin of victory of 28 points. Calumet has been promoted and will play this year in the more competitive Chicago Great Lakes conference. Calumet is expected to challenge for conference this year along with Phillips and Agriculture Science. The stakes will be much higher for Calumet this year. The Inter-City1 conference they were in last year was not eligible for the state playoffs. This year, the winner of any Chicago Conference may be eligible for the state playoffs.Players to watch
