What great training for the next generation of voters. Any distention will be quickly squashed. Make sure they NEVER question authority, they are always right and know what is best for you. Wake up folks, this is our future, they should be allowed some kind of voice, they are the next generation of VOTERS and they are being trained to NOT question authority or face overly sever repercussions. This isn't about respecting elders, This is about being able to question what they think is not right. Calling the cops on kids. Seems like a page out of the communist handbook.

Enough with the liberal teach-our-kids-to-protest routine. If you let high school kids protest things they didn't like, the school day would be 100% protest and zero education.

What good does it do to have students protesting budget cuts? What they should be protesting is the perverse spending that caused the budget cuts.

Public schoools are paid for by ME and other TAXPAYERS. The idea of providing a place of protest was NEVER a part of the program. We provide you with a building full of teachers and equipment for the purpose of LEARNING. If that is not why you come to the door, then GO AWAY.

"Calling the cops on kids. Seems like a page out of the communist handbook." That's rather blunt... Read the post... there were around 800 kids. Are you aware that whenever there is a LARGE amount of people in one place there has to be cops for the purpose of safety?

And what about letting the school go to Wrigley Field on Friday for the baseball semifinals? Don't get me wrong, it was great to see them but free speech ought to rank up there too.

The lane WY game at Wrigley was a school sanctioned event. This protest had nothing to do with the best interest of the kids, but all to do with the self-serving interests of counselors, spec ed teachers, music instructors, who are over paid and jobs are in jeopardy. The CPS is cutting budget on some jobs that are not needed. The protest was set up to use students to try to save a few bloated jobs and wasteful spending. Nothing at all to do with the kids.

WY's administration all but granted the students permission to protest. Of course, officially, they had to say it was not school-sanctioned- and couldn't "allow" the students to walk out of school. In the end, the Principal was proud of the students who protested and tehy received a very minor punishment (2 hours Sat school)most of the students thought was a small price to pay to speak their mind.

@ Kids-n: The protest was not only at CPS- it was at State level too. The students certainly have a vested interest in the number of students in their clases & quality of their HS teachers. The WY students planned the protest- they brought it to the school adminstrators- not the other way around. These students know that the newest teachers will be cut first-and many of those are their favorites.

to kids-n and I suppose you support the cutting of non-varsity sports since you don't sanction protesting about these cuts?
"The CPS is cutting budget on some jobs that are not needed. The protest was set up to use students to try to save a few bloated jobs and wasteful spending."

    @ hmmmmm

Of course I don't support cutting non-varsity sports.

I am for what makes sense...

I am for hiring band teachers...not paying some of them $104k.

I am for Drivers Ed...not paying some of them way over $104k.

I am for giving kids the best possible choices...so give them better alternatives such as charter schools or private school vouchers.

I am for kids having the best possible education...great so make it easy to fire bad teachers and replace em wih new good ones.

I am for sports...but I'd rather not have em if we keep funding a corrupt system... and please don't use kids as puppets.

This was not a Whitney Young student organized protest. This was a set up by special interests using the kids to try to give them more goodies. Goodies that tax payers cannot afford to pay anymore.

@Hmmmm....do you really feel that a band teacher is worth $104,000 plus an option to retire at age 55 with full pension and health benefits. Of course if you are the band teacher. But if you are footing the bill the answer is HECK NO!

Why do we have to over pay for his salary and benefits?

I bet most kids did it just to get out of class. I'm sure they didn't give all 800 kids detention, just the ones dumb enough to get caught.

I have been living in Chicago since 1957 and have been paying real estate taxes since 1987. HALF of my taxes go for education! The kids pay no money for their schooling therefore they have no voice on what they can do! When the kids become adults and pay their fare share, then they can open their mouths and complain!

I helped organize this, and we did actually all get Saturday School on May 8th.
Also, @kids - n: This was a completely student organized protest. No teachers or administrators were involved and it was all done over Facebook/text messaging in about 36 hours.

this is old news...the saturday schools were already served 2 weeks ago.

    @ WY

the kids actually walked from their school to the headquarters, stayed for one period, then all of them returned to school in time for their 7th period class to resume. they did not do it to miss school; unless, you just want to walk 2 miles with a shitload of cardboard signs....please don't make assumptions about things you know nothing about.

They should have used that time for boys track and girls softball practice.

dude joyce is as dumb as a rock. anyone who ha heard her give a speech would realize this.

or lane shouldn't have cared so much about city in the first place. if this would have been true then that incident of lane's baseball team choking wouldn't have mattered.

    ...maybe you shouldn't talk too.

ok if they got the money to pay people to watch 800 kids on saturday why the hell are they cutting any kind of budget. thats just BS.

And i dont care how old you are or how long you have been paying your real estate taxs. dont say dumb stuff like "they have no voice on what they can do". Im sure every kid has a parent that pays their taxes and expect that there kid will be given a proper education with a fair amount of opportunities available to them so when there is something wrong the kids in school know the most about it because they experience it first hand in school. and as to the we have no right to voice what we get to do......yes we do its our right as Americans u communist prick.

Haha I like how all these people who have no first hand info on this story think out teacher were running around the school whispering into our years to go out and protest for them. No. Sure we don't want to see out teachers fired but we are also protesting for our selves. Take a poll and see how many CPS kids are looking forward to having near 40 kids on average in each one of their class.

And the Saturday schools were given out because those are the rules and a principle can't ignore when people are blatantly breaking them, even for a good cause. Also, it makes us look much more motivated and passionate about this issue when kids are protesting despite knowing in advance that they will be punished for it.

And the track team was not involved seeing at how this was the day of city prelims.

I'll agree that Lane baseball sucks. People from Lane are actually glad these cocky kids got their comeuppance.

Fact is Lane track > everyone.
    Lane girls softball > everyone.

    ^
should have is not from Lane.

..yes we do its our right as Americans u communist prick.

The little shit sounds angry, maybe itz because his diaper is full of shit.

seeing that track is girls and boys sport, i believe you owe half of that share to the girls track team at WY.
& you act like lanes softball team is the truth, when in fact they didnt start out with the best season. to tell you the truth NOBODY is the truth- not even WY-til they prove it at state.

& should have is definitely from lane, typical lane fan actually. brag about their strength but don't ever fully acknowledge their weakness

did shouldnt have get rejected by lane or something?

You mad? Cuz i clearly had your argument squashed and all u came back with was hostility. I thought you were an adult. Act like one. Lol children.

Before you make that comment, understand something...some of those kids probably have after school jobs and are paying their fees. They do have a crapload of them as I was one of the students from back in the day who paid them. As a graduate of WY, I do feel that the students had a right to protest, maybe though they could have done it in a more suitable manner. However, the cop out by the admin is not shocking considering.

    .

Every student and every person on america has a right to protest.

I'm all for debate on any issue. What I can't stand is teh government or the CPS thinkking they are entitled to our money.

The CPS is over 60% low income if not even higher. Low income and illegals pay a lower share of taxes and thus get lower quliaty for the most part education. Any low income person that wants a better quality education of free to move out to the suburbs. Or they can stay in teh CPS and live with the conditions.

"And i dont care how old you are or how long you have been paying your real estate taxs"

You are the super dumb prick. Can't even spell correctly even after all that tax money I and your parent's
spent on you! You don't even know when socialism has infected your stupid brain.
