All Sophomore Sports Suspended/Cut in CPS!
This is getting crazier by the day. According to a Chicago Tribune article, CPS district Sports Director Calvin Davis sent out a memo to all CPS athletic directors that effective immediately
"Though spring sports teams can officially begin practice today, the varsity and freshman levels are the only levels of girls and boys coaches approved to begin practice at this time," the memo says. "The CPS system continues to carefully examine all programs before specific budgetary decisions are finalized."

CPS Sports Director
You see the CPS as everyone knows is in a major budget crunch. Today was supposed to be the official first day of practice for spring sports. I'm assuming they have decided to cut/suspend sophomore sports because there are more sophomore teams than freshman teams.
The following is a list of spring sports and what I am assuming are their status:
CPS spring sports status
Water Polo - (entire sport cut - all levels affected)
Lacrosse - (entire sport cut - all levels affected)
Baseball - (sophomore level cut - freshman level, varsity level unaffected)
Girls Softball - (sophomore level cut - freshman level, varsity level unaffected)
Girls Soccer - (sophomore level cut - freshman level, varsity level unaffected)
Boys Volleyball - (sophomore level cut - freshman level, varsity level unaffected)
Boys Tennis - (largely unaffected because most CPS schools only have varsity and frosh-soph levels)
Boys and Girls Track - (largely unaffected because, no CPS teams have sophomore only teams; I'm guessing that freshman and sophomores will continue to practice and be coached with varsity teams as they usually do)
No word yet if this is a temporary measure or if this is permanent. There are lot's of questions to left to be answered.
Whatever happens, this is going to leave a permanent scar to the anyone (parents, teachers, students, alumni, future students) involved in CPS sports in any way. I'll post more or comment as I get additional information.
the thing is, even track will be affected since the CPS is not allowing teams to pay assistant coaches. track uses their stipends differently since the sport is structured differently. unlike a baseball team, the stipends on the track team are used to pay the different speciality coaches like sprints, jumps, etc. so, if coaches don't choose to stay, then there won't be the proper expertise or amount of coaches to supervise a huge track team, which are sometimes the biggest teams in all the sports besides football
and, there will be no frosh/soph championships for track

^how do you know?

because it's been decided already. there might be a scaled down freshman only meet, but that would be it. has to be consistent with the other sports in the CPS. since track doesn't have "conference games" or anything like that, the only CPS sponsored meet that they can eliminate and keep in line with the "soph cuts" is the CPS champs

This may sound cold but how about eliminating the free breakfasts at the schools? I understand people need help, but honestly, would it be that big of a drain for these families to give their child a bowl of decent cereal and a banana for breakfast? My kids have seen those free breakfasts at their school and tell me they wouldn't eat them even if they were paid to do so. In a time when all we hear about is the ever rising rate of childhood obesity, I'm completely in favor of eliminating those free donuts in the morning.

The CPS has really sunken to a new low. What happened to education & school being all about children? This headline on the same day as the headline about school superintendents' sky high salaries. Is there ANY honor or integrity anywhere anymore ??
