Espoire Habimana (so) of little known Chicago Math and Science Academy in Rodgers Park.
I knew that Espoire Habimana was fast. After, all he did win the CPS freshman city championship last year rather handily with a time of 11:07 - way ahead of the second place finisher who ran it in 11:42.
But a 16:20 opened my eyes even more. Habimana won the Hyde Park Invite held Saturday with a 16:20 over 3 miles. His nearest competitor was Andrew Rodriguez of Gage Park who ran a good time of 16:56. Rodriguez maybe another runner to watch out for. He was a 20 minute 3 miler last year for Gage Park.
The city championship is in 2 weeks. I'm not sure where Habimana (or Rodriguez) will run. If he runs at the frosh-soph level he should be the favorite to take the title. Then again, if Habimana runs at the varsity level - he could challenge for a top 12 if not better result.
