Preview:
The Prospect Invitational is always a good gauge of your track team. Times are always fast. For instance, two years ago, York ran a 7:43.6 in the 4x800 meter relay. The third place time that year was Lyons with a 7:51.1. Those are all state championship caliber times. Expect this year, to be pretty much how it is every year: FAST!!!
Distance races are always fast at the Prospect Invite. Lane Tech's Kulayfi Haji is Lane's best hope of scoring in distances. Haji ran a 4:29 in the 1600 meter run last week to run at the Highland Park Invite last week, but he may need to run a PR to score high. In the last DyeStat Leaderboard, York has an amazing 6 runners that have run below 4:27, including Steve Sulkin who has run a 4:18.04.
The 4x800 meter run is always exciting at the Prospect Invite due to the prescence of distance schools like York, Lyons, and Naperville Central from the west suburbs and Mid-Suburban League teams Hersey, Prospect, and Schaumburg. In most years, the 4x8 is often a mini-state meet preview. Expect Lane to run a good team in the 4x8. Lane will likely eclipse it's season best time of 8:22.87
Kyles vs Williams
Chris Kyles will be severely tested versus Khara Williams of York
In addition to the distance events, the marquee event of the day may be the 100 meter dash. The race will should two of the top sprinters in the state in Khara WIlliams of York and Chris Kyles of Lane Tech. Kyles finished 5th in the state last year and is unbeaten outdoors so far this year. Khara Williams of York has run some of the fastest times in the state this year including an adjusted time of 10.74 at the Bud Mohns invite. The winner of this race may be the favorite to win the 100 meter run at the state meet.
It is likely that the highest Lane Tech has ever finished in this meet in the past 20 years was a 5th place finish 2 years ago. when they scored 68 points. Due to the strength of Kyles and a top heavy lineup, Lane will have an opportunity to eclipse the 68 points. It has been said that Lane won the Prospect Invite in 1989.
