Kenwood's Matthew Funches was Kenwood's only male athlete for Kenwood at the Illinois Prep Top Times Meet last month. He quietly jumped 42-00.25 inches to place an impressive 11th place against some of the top class AA triple jumpers in the state.
At the Ed Key Invite on Saturday, Funches leaped an eye opening 44'3.75". His leap was over 2 feet greater than his IPPT meet last month. If Funches keeps jumping like he did and maybe even improve a bit, he may realistically set his sights on scoring high at the state meet in the Class AA triple jump.
Funches led Kenwood to the victory at Ed Key with 158 points. Marshall placed 2nd with 116 points.
Other notable performances at the Ed Key invite includes:
- Brooks Sophomore Avery Dunlap won the 100 meter dash in 11.20. It is not sure wheter that time was hand timed or utilized a much more accurate Fully Automated Timing (FAT). If FAT was used, his time of 11.20 automatically makes Dunlap a city championship contender in the 100 meter run. Just to give you an idea how fast 11.20 is, the city champion last year (Antwain Windmon of Morgan Park) ran an 11.21. Regardless, Dunlap, a relative unknown, is now on the Leaderboard
- Robeson freshman Jamelle Spencer finished 2nd behind Dunlap in the 100 meter dash with a lightning quick 11.30. Again, if it is an FAT time, Spencer's time automatically puts him near the top in the 100 Leaderboard.
- Robeson ran a 1:35.9 in the 4x200 - the 2nd fastest CPS time in that event this outdoor season.
- Kenwood junior Massie Brock tripled jumped 42-8.25 - to place him 2nd on the CPS Leaderboard.
